This is just a guess but if you have a large pool of water ie. pond nearby would that help? Or are they basing it on firefighting?

They have me bent over the barrel and they forgot too apply the lube. Phoned a few places, because i am in the country they says thats why it's so much. You have too have a fire hydrant close by. I am 15 km too the nearest fire hall. So if anyone has any good tips i would appreciate it, don't wanna pay them $8600 for construction ins if i don't have too.

I would keep looking, your build insurance shouldn't cost more than a regular policy. There are tons of homes that are more than 15 Km from a fire hall, and wouldn't pay that much for a regular policy.

Mine is through TD Meloche Monnex.

All our windows are finally in and doors.

Sand is in the basement.

With any luck they will pour the basement and start siding Monday.

arff, that's the same style door we went with, except no window above.

Hopefully the work starts again next week(piles/septic/plumbing). Framer (fellow S&Mer) :( made lots of mistakes and will cost me several thousand dollars to redo/repair. Luckily he never finished the floor trusses and sub floor, or it would have been worse and way more expensive. Over 4 weeks behind on framing now.

That sucks,,,,our home builder is about 6 weeks behind with our house. The rain really screwed us up.But I am happy with the quality of the build so far. Plus with my shifts I am checking it daily..

I live 10 ft away from the new build, so checking it is easy for me!!:d

One of the hazards of being your own GC, dealing with trades.

We sent our builder a e mail with more questions. The verbal visits don't really work at times.

Our move in date is tomorrow...:eek:
More like x mas now..

you had to wait a month? wow, we waited the normal 7 days for the house my friend is building and we packed the shat out of the back fill with hoe pack, jump jack and sheeps foot packer, lol but i guess we probably didnt have as much to back fill as its a walk out basment type house

20 -30 blows, it's like a fence post pounder but witha rod in it to pound into the ground, same type of tool the engineers use when testing compaction

need 28 day strength on high concrete walls to do any backfilling.

what do you mean 20-30 on your compaction test tool?

Ya but who actually waits? That is only for full strength, after even a week it has pretty high percentage. If your not a idiot backfilling it is perfectly fine after a week or so, especially in the summer, in the winter ya I would wait longer. Plus, 90% of people who backfill don't even pack it anyways so it doesn't matter.

The best thing to do is to somewhat pack it, then lightly soak it during the rest of the build, and give it a winter freeze and thaw to settle and you'll be set. No matter how well you pack it (without damaging the wall) it's going to settle.

And with those earthquake strapes the walls are never going to go anywhere LOL! I still cannot believe the retards who wanted them brought in here.

98% compaction better not settle!

98% compaction against a basement wall? You better prey your concrete walls are perfectly strong and lots of rebar or you'll be redoing them. That is way more compaction then i'd ever dream of putting for that. With all those corners it would help. But i'd still be scared regardless. And the cost, you'll be there for days backfilling because you can only do so little at once. Ya it won't settle though.

Hell, that is all the city specs for their sidewalks.......
