Holy boys. Relax. We have no details. I agree I would never leave someone overnight by themselves, but who knows, maybe they left the guy with all the extra warm gear, all the food, built him a fire and cut all the firewood, all the while tucking him in and kissing him goodnight. There is usually a reason. Maybe wait to hear it before claiming he was "left to die"?

Something similar to this happened to me and a buddy a few years back. We went over the chute across from Powder King and were riding the back end of Beaver Creek when we came upon a big group of sledders from Saskatchewan, at least 10 sleds in the group. One of the guys sleds was broke down and they couldn't get it running. We had a look and tried helping, but we couldn't get it to fire up either. I had my sat phone and offered to call them a chopper because there is no way you are dragging a sled outta there. We stuck around till the chopper arrived and helped them out. This is when they find out that the chopper cannot haul the sled and rider out at the same time, to close to it's lift capacity. Not one of the guys in his group would double him outta there, they were going to force him to spend another 2K just to get the chopper to come back for him. I doubled him out to Powder King where we waited at least another 3 hours for his buddies to pick him up, they had to go right to the front end of Beaver where they were parked. It wasn't that hard to get him outta there the worst part was coming down the chute across from Powder King, we were flying when we hit the bottom my brake rotor was orange and looked like it was being air arced

'This story is unbelievably hard for me to fathom. For the life of me I can't understand how 4 other dudes all agreed it was a good idea to leave the 5th on the hill by himself. Even mentally handicapped people have an ounce of logic, but none can be found in this circumstance.

I can imagine that guy heard every twig crack all night long sitting in the dark. Could be easy prey for predators. There is strength in numbers.

Sorry guys but if you are not prepared to spend one night in the bush alone you are not prepared to even go out. It is just not that big a deal. Lots of area where there is no chance of doubling out. If you just need your buddies to bring back a part in the morning to get you going why should they stay?

Here's a question for snow and mud peeps. I've never even thought of this or considered it before right now. How much trouble would a guy or small group get in if they intentionally spent the night on the hill for enjoyment? 99% of mountain riders have a payed for comfy motel bed to go back to and usually everyone wants off the hill at the end of the day. I get that.
I am personally not one bit afraid of the idea as I am a very seasoned vet in winter camping. I wouldn't even need a big pile of stuff to make it enjoyable either. Between what I pack in my Float 32 and my tunnel bag, I could easily enjoy a weekend on the side of the hill no problem. Only thing I'd lack is fuel to keep sending it lmao!
Im 100% positive that there are rules in place against this. However...there are also rules in place stating lots of things to be "against the law" that virtually nobody bat's an eye too as well.

It is unlawful to spend a night “in” any of the cabins in Fernie.
The area around the cabins is Crown land so random camping is still allowed.
I've been riding for a long time and I can honestly say that there isn't a chance we leave someone behind no matter what! When sleds use to only go half as good, I've doubled out of the back of Eagles and even Grace so that excuse for me doesnt cut it!! If you want to spend the night by yourself then you are an idiot
