We trying to do something creative this year with sled purchases, including a discount on avy gear and training. I think that it is great that the awareness is out and people are much more diligent about avalanche preparedness.

Well there you go MOMMA kudo's to you. I have always said that a NEW sled purchase should come with the gear.... your spending 12-17 grand and whats the real cost of the gear it works out to about 3-5% of the cost of the sled (retail that is) and when i buy a sled im looking for stuff to be thrown into the deal. I say keep them safe give them the gear and let them pay for the skid plates and upgrades and if they have the gear good for them they have new gear!
I agree with the idea of the air bag Rowdy but most peeps dont have one and have found that it will give some people a sence of security to go places that they shouldnt or should say go places when they shouldnt. I sled with all people only if they have the required gear
Good post Rowdy

All the equipment in the world won't do sh!t if you don't know how to use it. I felt I was quite comfortable with my equipment, practiced with it a lot. Once I took some proper training, I found more holes in my knowledge that I would ever admit. I feel that the first thing any new rider should get is training, buy your gear after that.

I wear a avy bag, but I also ride a lot, unlike some of my friends and family who come once or twice a year so how can they justify the cost of a bag for one or two trips?

got into a heated debate over the weekend about sledding and what the requirements for avalanche safety gear should be. One guy said that he would not go sledding with anyone that did not have an avalanche bag. This seemed kind of....snooty to me. I agree not riding with someone that does not have beacon, probe and shovel, even maybe avalanche training, but without an avalanche bag? I think that having it is a good idea, and why not have it if you can afford it or if it suits your riding style. My issue is the bags that i have seen do not offer anything as far as storage in the actual pack goes.

What are your thoughts? Would you tell someone to hit the road if they showed up with a regular pack?

yup....... I know 2 people including a friend that died in an avy, and have heard of several others, that were deployed and several that weren't deployed....... I don't wear an avy bag

Are you F*^!ing serious pull ur head out of ur azz. If they died chances are it was terrain trap bag doesn't lift you from underneath 20 feet of snow. The bag statistics are proven and to be a mod of the site and not vindicate them as a good addition to your safety gear I gotta think your an idiot. You have definatly shaken my faith in good advice on S&M. Definatly thought you were smarter than that, People and terrain can be misjudged happens all the time even to the pro's. Fact have had quite a few buddies caught in sluffs and slides and have lost a good friend on Hall Mtn. Hrt Offraod is a wicked rider and 2 seasons ago was buried alive and survived. If you think for 1 second you can call the hill satability every time your sadly mistaken, When you rider backcountry there is risk doo your best to minimize it and if that includes spending $ 600 to $ 1200 bucks on a bag your a fool not to.

if you can afford the bag, get one. If you can't afford it, dont. We all have our own reasons to get back home safely. So we owe it to ourselves and our families to be as prepared as we can be should the unthinkable ever happen.
Personally i've deployed my bag 5 times, All of them as I was ducking under a branch or while lifting/heaving on a stuck sled. I wont ride without it. You on the other hand, as long as you have the basic gear and knowledge to find and dig me out, can wear a pink thong and tutu for all I care.
cheers

HaHa. Different analogy. Most peeps would say yes.................when they see the RC's put there boat in the water.Lol.

I believe the law is that "you have to have enough vest's for everyone on board they dont HAVE to be on."

I am pretty sure of this but someone correct me if I am wrong?

on a seadoo yes mandatory but not on a motor boat.

I agree with all my logical friends if you can afford it and ride enough in the mountains its a great investment and could save you so do it. or try and use your brain to minimize exposure but anything can happen.

you are correct just have to have enough in the boat for as many passengers are on and they must be CC approved the gel ski vests don't cut it as a personal floatation device. Hope that helps clear it up John.

This is another one of those laws that dosent entirly make sense.....There has to be a coast guard approved life vest "visible/accessible"in the boat for every person. But you dont have to wear it.....so not stowed under a seat or in a ski locker....

Mine sits under my feet. If you are under 16 you gotta wear it. That has been the rules for a long time in our boat. Is it a double standard, absolutely.

I thought this thread was about avy bags, and Summitric and I not having them?
