Would you sled with someone that doesn't have an avy bag?

Holy $hit...I actually agree with maxwell. Is our feud and head butting over?! you seem to be answering positive to things I post now...I'm not sure what to think...

But that is pretty cool that you get a free avy bag with a sled purchase.

I'm all growed up now!

another great point by Maxwell, if these things are supposed to help make our sport safer then why the heck are they so expensive? Same goes for beacons, probes etc.....

Ya! Beacon technology is extreeemely primative! You can buy high tech handheld gps systems accurate to within 2 meters for 500 bucks. And that gets you a basic beacon? Wtf?

I guess your paying for the reliabilty aspect.........no still doesn't add up...

Seven of us were all wearing Avy packs when the avalanche happened. We were all on different aspects of the mountain. Not one of us pulled the trigger including my friend who died there. He was 7' deep. Happened so fast

My issue with the statement of "I will not sled with anyone that does not have an avalanche bag" is that it does not have the personal effect on the group that riding without a beacon, probe and shovel does. If I rode without those things it puts your life in danger just as much as mine. An avalanche bag is more for personal safety as opposed to group safety. Am I wrong in thinking this?

Also, I go back to the lack of storage the avy bags that I've seen have. I don't have any source of storage except for my back pack and I carry a lot of survival stuff in there.

I would also sled with people who have no Avy bag... its a matter of personal choice that doesn't determine whether "they" live or die under my care... I wear an avy bag that carries ALL of my camera gear, extra lenses, two helmet cams and the small sony handycam, as well as a pair of extra gloves, small amount of first aid supplies, extra goggle lenses, a water bottle, granola bars, Advil, Tylenol, a flashlight and hand and toe warmers... You can store plenty in an avy pack, you just have to buy the right one.

I've seen your avy bag.... pretty sure I've got hockey bags that hold less :)

This is like saying you didn't bring the pb and j samiches? Fawk off! Find new friends!

On the other hand you get a free avy bag when you buy a new skidoo sled from martin motorsports. Just saying. That's how we all got them.

I realize they are expensive but if you can afford the sled you can afford the bag I suppose. I don't know why they are so pricy? They seem pretty basic?

Just another tool like everyone said!

But deffinetly not a reason to not ride with someone. I see morons every day with avy bags and all the greatest tools but I'd rather ride with someone who has a beacon probe and shovel that knows how to use it!!

We trying to do something creative this year with sled purchases, including a discount on avy gear and training. I think that it is great that the awareness is out and people are much more diligent about avalanche preparedness.

and I wear an avy bag with everything I need for survival in it. It's not a big one, 18L but it's not heavy and it stores what I need. I use luggage on my windshield and tunnel to store other stuff that is not as survival oriented. Personal choice. I choose to do everything I can to survive, I believe that the avy bag is only one of my tools. The most important tool being my brain.

But lets be honest.......if people are riding a pro or proclimb, are they really going to be able to get up close to avalanche terrain? Definitely a good initiative from the Doo dealer though. ;)

Sorry about your friend. You bring up a good point though about avalanches happening so fast that you don't get a chance to think but just react. I'm pretty sure pulling the release on the Avy pack isn't the first thing you think of when an avalanche occurs. I could be wrong though but it's not like you practice using it.

Spend thousands on the sled 3 to 4 hun on the beacon another 50 to 150 on probe another 60 to 100 on shovel and not get a bag don't make sence to me. Should try to have the latest safety equip for the sport. It's a responsible move and it can give you a better chance of comin out on top if you are involved in an avy. I wouldn't not ride with someone that doesn't have one just seems if your seriously into the sport it would be a great addition to your gear. Going home alive is the main goal so anything that helps accomplish that should be strongly considered.

if u have the cash u can buy a sled and "call " yourself a sledder if u have the cash u can buy a air bag , beacon , probe , and shovel and say u know how to use them... but one thing u cant buy is experience and skill . so if u have an air bag good for u but i wanna see u do a beacon search first ! before every ride ! oh ya same goes for the bikers these days lol anyone can buy a bike ! but can ya ride it ?????????????????????????????????????? lol

I ride with guys that have them and guys that dont have them, I don't have one personally as I just haven't gotten around to making that $1000+ purchase. There is other things I need / want first for my sledding gear, but eventually I will have one, can't hurt thats for sure. As for not riding with someone if they don't have one............ seems retarded to me but whatever

I don't send people home or say they can't come when they don't have a beacon. I wouldn't say you can't come if you don't have an avi bag.

Clarifying the above, if I'm guiding and they don't have a beacon, probe and shovel, I have 2 sets in my truck and will give a quick lesson. The next step is from my brain, I will take these dudes on a ride with no or minimal avi danger (ie the Elk Valley trail ride). People who have honestly forgotten the beacon in the hotel will have to go back and get it and those that have forgotten it at home get to use my extra one. I have learned a simple fact that when guiding not all people will listen and some will sneak off and doo what they want to do regardless of others safety or concern. They only go with me is twice; the first time and the last time! Basically, when I ride, a beacon and proper use is compulsory and that dictates where I ride. I don't even take people without beacons up the Crossing Creek trail. When we ride by ourselves it is always and always has been beacon, probe and shovel. We don't leave the parking lot without and most have extra in the trucks to help out if we forget one at home.

I wear a bag for the unexpected. I have to look out for everyone in the group and I want as many tools as are necessary for the safety of the group cause without me some of the peeps or maybe most of them would have a hard time finding there way back to the truck. I have a BCA Float 36 and there is lots of storage. Got a great deal on an auction on S&M last winter and couldn't refuse it. Now to remember to discharge when needed. If someone I'm riding with doesn't have a bag, so be it! I don't even comment.

I have a buddy, who sold bags, rode extreme terrain, and was not a real careless dude in the mountains. He triggered an avi (it wasn't the first one he triggered in his years of riding) and was buried. It happened so fast, even with his experience, he didn't have time to pull the chord. That was a life changing event for him as the rescue was a comedy of errors.

I takes more than a beacon, probe, shovel and an avi bag sometimes. The biggest asset is knowing the terrain and the daily conditions and how to put everything into perspective to be safe on any given day.

I wear a bag because I like to live. Anything that can give you a better chance at surviving an event is a must for my riding experience. The 2 guys I ride with all the time all have the same safety equipment that I wear. I would ride with people that don't have a bag but not with them if they didn't have the rest of the gear. As far as bags are concerned there really is only one question to ask yourself if you ride in avalanche terrain........how much value do you put on your life? Its to late to buy a bag if your already buried.
