Great posts!

I was thinking about this thread again and it came to me.....whatever happened to walking over to your neighbour, introducing yourself and letting them know your intentions. Like "we plan to party all night, any probs come have a drink or let us know to keep it down". Or "I need to run my generator for while, I'll move it around and you give me a thumbs up when the noise is good for you, let me know if it becomes a bother". Perhaps the other direction like "we have a small chld that needs her sleep and if she doesn't get it I'll be dropping her off at your campsite for the day".

Guess we have all become so scared of one another.

I tell my neighbours here at home when we plan on having a party and tell them to call if it's bothering them. Never had an issue. Not sure whey we don't do it camping. Afraid the camper might have a big bowie knife I guess. Irony is that if you let people know they can actually have a say in the matter, it seems to make them more accepting of the very situation.

Wow...I feel good for thinking such positive thoughts. :d:beer:

We have an ultra quiet generator and I LOVE it, but was interested in seeing if there were ways to make it even more quiet. Turns out there are several options for reducing the exhaust noise (without building a box). One of the most interesting and apparently effective is this Super Trapp Quiet Muffler:

Jacks Small Engines-Quiet Mufflers for Small Engines.

Cheap, easy to install, effective and acts as a spark arrestor. I could not find it anywhere else. Plan on trying the 3S with my generator. Even a couple more decibles less will have a profound impact for everyone. I should pass out brochures at the campsites. :p

And speaking of generators, we have 2 - 6 volt deep cells and even over the cccold, snowy long weekend we did not have to run our generator at all. Batteries were fine running the furnace for three days. There was a camp within our vicinity that ran thier noisy gen from 8AM to 11PM. Not sure why as they all seemed to be sitting outside by the fire. Maybe Grandma was inside watching soaps.

Next time I will ask.....if only to satisfy my own curiosity.

the folks i camp with that don't have the 6v system usually have to run theirs for at least a few hours each day to keep their batteries up. may long I heard them fire up in the wee hours because their furnaces would run the batts down. the onboard gennys in the gear box haulers are pretty loud, another buddy has a jayco toy hauler and the onan in that unit is loud as well.

the first time we went camping after going with the 6v setup I was amazed how long they held charge, we went for 3 days as well, furnace running every night. with the single 12v it wouldn't last 24 hrs if the furnace ran. I have a 1000w inverter hooked up so the kids can play video games or watch movies, ususally only fire up the honda in the morning for coffee....:d

My new railer has a big solar panel on top, woundering how long U can go. They tell me forever but we'll see!

It has 2 12 marine batts in it, but as soon as they are toast, it will be 6's all the way.

We have always put solar panel on roof of all our units and have NEVER had battery issues. We also have a very good sleeping bag and only have the furnace on the lowest setting and only in the early spring or late fall is it ever on. What I hate is when gensets are on ALLNIGHT.
I find that a lot of people buy these big expensive untis so than can have the comforts of home, if you can't rough it for a few days and keep the electrical appliances at home, than you are not really camping. Buy a really good sleeping bag and wear long johns at night to stay warm.
The one noise problem we had mentioned in earlier post, was a guy who kept his genset running all night, it was a noisy one. Hubby went over the next morning, very cranky from lack of sleep and told the guy if it was on again all night it would not run properly after that. The guy said he needed it to nuke the babies bottle, yeah right, do it the old fashion way, on the stove in a pot of water. Any way the guy turned it off early the next night. This was at Bighorn in the middle of July. By the way we never did see a baby there. And how do these people possibly sleep themselves when these things are running? I don't get it.

Frankly, if you're in a queen size bed, in a trailer with a furnace and a fibreglass roof, you sure as hell aren't 'roughing it'. Electrical appliances or not.

you were random camping and your hubby went over to someone and said that? if anyone came over to my camp out in the middle of nowhere and threatened me with damage to my personal property, he would have a lot more than a genny running all night to worry about. damn skippy....

what's with the private campsites you go there for a weekend you get a list of rules and a group of campers come in and party till 2 or 3 let there dogs not dog run all over the campsite and not 1 person does anything if your not going to inforce the rules then don't make them if you want to party till 3 and let your dogs run free then randem camp out in the back some where we have 2 small kids we don't need your friendly dog scaring them

Good thread papa.Hey,were you in Olds last Friday pulling trailer with Rzr in box of truck???

If you want to sleep in a tent with the bugs, morning dew drips, coolers and crap laying all over the place, well then my friend, you enjoy "roughing it". I will have a good night sleep in my queen bed, knowing that my solar panels pumped enough juice into my batteries so I can leave my furnace set at 65. I will be looking up at my fiberglass roof, and thinking how nice a hot shower in the morning will feel while my built in generator is helping to brew up a fresh pot of coffee. After 2 or 3 days of rain and snow, roughing it is highly over-rated. But, back on topic, either random camping or in a paid site, it would be nice if everybody kept their dogs on a leash. If they are barkers, leave them in the trailer. If they are area protective, leave them at home, because I am with Modman, if it bites my kid, the dog is done.

It's not unreasonable IMO. Like you said, who the hell wants to drive out in the backcountry to be "alone" and then camp right next to someone? Tons of room out there, find your own space peeps!

same as sledding stay the h--- out of modmans way, he gets those glassy eye's, and it's out of control. he needs his alone time, seen grizzly's high tail it when he gets that look likes to chew on logs and trees while sledding, seems to calm him down after a while.
