I started with a small Chinese heli and I kept crashing all the time, Phoenix sim really helped me a lot. If I was going to recommend a good starter nitro it would be a thunder tiger raptor 50, very stable compared to the small 400 class helis and the parts a cheap, surprisingly easy to fly if it's setup right! Mine has over 140 flights on it and still no mechanical problems. Might not be the most high performance heli but let's face it when you start out your thumbs are shaking, your mouth is dry and that's just starting the motor. Lol

You bet! I made that hook and it's released with a servo, I have 12 channels at work when I fly that one

Went with a dx6i and Nano CPx. Thought about starting with the 300x or 450 3d but I think it's a tad smarter to learn CP on a little guy first. Stay tuned

I really like my MCPX BL for learning. When I crash I usually just pick up all the pieces and put it back together. When I crash the 300x it's a lot more money and time spent getting it back together. But the bigger the heli the more stable and smooth it is.

Dx6i is nice as you can tame the heli with dual rates and expo. Good luck with the learning, it gets to be addictive.

I can verify that a 120SR can not lift an iphone....LOL

What's a good next step from the 120?

MCPX or the Nano is a good next step. I went to the 130 thinking it was a next step up but it's a POS. Constantly replacing parts.

Did I mention I have a 130 for sale, lots of spare parts
