pulling behind a fifth

does anyone have experence pulling a trailer behind a fifth wheel ?? is the bumper strong enough ??

Hi Bryan, I have pulled quads behind my 5th wheel for about 8 years and have never had a problem.
No the bumper is ussually not strong enough to pull with.
The last hitch I put on. I used 4x2 tubing and welded plates on so that the width fit inside the frame rails of the 5th wheel. I then put plates on the outside of the rails. and bolted them all together.
In the centre of the 4x2 tubing, I welded a tube for a standard reciever hitch.
Be careful not to exceed the maximum allowable length of 65 ft.
never get in a hurry, and allow time for the increase in stopping distance.

I pull my 18.5' foot boat behind my 28' 5th wheel. Ya, I know I'm too long but its only illegal if you get caught. The hitch I had build for the back of the 5th wheel is attached to the frame rails on the trailer along with the bumper. I wouldn't attach a hitch just to the bumper unless the trailer is very small like a dirtbike trailer. My

Maximum trailer width: 2.6 meters (8 feet 5 inches). Mobile living accommodations - 3.05 meters (10 feet)

Maximum trailer height: 3.85 meters (12 feet 6 inches)

Maximum trailer length: 12.5 meters (41 feet)

Vehicle combinations permitted? Yes, up to 3 vehicles

Maximum combined length: 20 meters (66 feet)

Thanks all. We tried it this weekend. Installed a bolt on bumber hitch, a extra brace welded to the frame. Pulled nice. a bit of a challange when you miss the turn and have to turn around.!

I haven't pulled the quad trailer yet I just had to see what it looked like.

I am right at 66' if I only had a short box I have a little room to move!
I am going to wait until next year before I pull it.
I might buy a triton trailer by then should be a little easier to pull then the steel sws.

Towing prohibitions

86(1) A person shall not drive or operate a vehicle that is towing a trailer

(a) that is more than 2.6 metres wide, or

(b) that is more than 4.0 metres high as measured from level ground.

(2) Subsection (1) does not apply if the trailer is a recreational vehicle that is not more than 3.05 metres wide.

(3) A person shall not drive or operate a combination of a towing unit and one or more trailers if the combination is more than 20 metres long.

(4) A person may drive or operate a combination of a towing unit and 2 trailers only if the combination meets the following requirements:

(a) the lead trailer must be towed by a pin and plate fifth wheel coupling mounted over the rear axle of the towing vehicle and fastened to its frame;

(b) the lead trailer must have 2 or more axles in tandem;

(c) the longer trailer must be the lead trailer;

(d) the hitch connecting the lead trailer and the 2nd trailer must be fastened to the frame of the lead trailer.

(5) This section does not apply to a combination of commercial vehicles.

Attachment standards

87(1) A person shall not drive or operate a vehicle that is towing a trailer unless the trailer is attached to the towing unit by 2 separate means of attachment designed so that the failure of one attachment does not permit the trailer to separate from the towing unit.

(2) Each means of attachment must have sufficient strength to pull all the weight towed by the towing unit.

(3) The secondary means of attachment must be capable of

(a) towing the trailer so that the trailer substantially follows in the track of the towing vehicle, and

(b) preventing the drawbar of the trailer or the primary means of attachment from touching the road surface.

(4) The lead trailer in a combination is the towing unit for the 2nd trailer.

(5) This section does not require a second means of attachment in the case of a fifth wheel trailer.

Towing standards

88 A person shall not drive or operate a motor vehicle that tows another motor vehicle unless the means of attachment

(a) is of sufficient strength to pull all the weight that is being towed, and

(b) is designed so that the towed motor vehicle substantially follows in the track of the towing unit.

Trailer rental prohibition

89 A person shall not possess a trailer for rental purposes unless the trailer has the maximum laden weight at which it may be operated printed visibly, legibly and conspicuously on both sides of the trailer in letters and numerals that are at least 50 millimetres high.

Recreational vehicle CSA Standard

90(1) CSA Standard Z240 RV series ‑ 99 Recreational Vehicles is adopted and applies to recreational vehicles.

(2) A person shall not construct, manufacture or cause to be constructed or manufactured a recreational vehicle unless it complies with subsection (1).

(3) A person shall not advertise or lease a recreational vehicle manufactured after July 1, 1971 unless it complies with subsection (1).

(4) A vehicle that complies with subsection (1) must have a mark authorised by the CSA on the vehicle or be certified by another method adopted by the CSA.

(5) Despite subsections (1), (2) and (3), a recreational vehicle may have an awning that projects not more than 100 millimetres from the right or left side.

Camper, tent trailer standards

91(1) CSA Standard Z240 RV series ‑ 99 relating to vehicle lighting, reflectors and glazing material is adopted and applies to a camper unit.

(2) CSA Standard Z240 RV series ‑ 99 relating to couplings, hitches and safety links is adopted and applies to a tent trailer.

(3) A person shall not construct or manufacture or cause to be constructed or manufactured a camper body or tent trailer unless the camper body or tent trailer complies with subsections (1) and (2).

(4) A person shall not advertise or lease a camper body or tent trailer manufactured after July 1st, 1971, unless the camper body or tent trailer complies with subsections (1) and (2).

I had a chevy crew 4x4 short Duramax 04, Laredo 29', and a 10 ft. , aluminum snowmobile trailer. Pulled great! State parks can be a pain when crowded. What ever your fifth will clear the trailer will to. 2 in reciever to the frame is best. With everybody sueing everybody these days.........

Everything looks good except for the total length, when i wheeled my unit into the scales they told me 21m total for Alberta, 21m for Sask, and 22m for Manitoba, no B-trains in BC. I was glad because i was 20.93m.
