How do you know what skiers buy? Most ski shops rent out their rental fleet every weekend, sell gloves, toques, poles, socks, skis boots... my buddy runs a ski shop and skiers spend money. Not all of them pack lunches and sleep in their cars.
They also buy real estate which is what builds the resorts.
95 % of skiers are from Europe in revy it seems

The One Year I Did.

The one year I used a bumper pull RV, sleds on the deck to cover much of BC.

The RV was set-up as sleeping quarters only and Tim Hortons coffee shop in the morning,,, "the water system in trailer was not getting used as it would of froze up, so jugs of water in-side the trailer worked best.

I disconnect the gas & fire alarm senders so I could let my little gen-set idle in-side the trailer to keep it hot in there,,," about 20 hours idling time per 2 L's" would keep it toasty in there,,, "that's 2 days at 10 hours each".

I'd kick the door open for 10 minutes to clear the exhaust and power up the propane furnace for a good nights sleep.

2 30lb propane bottled would last me about 10 days, so I got 2 more that would give me close to a month,,, and a 800 Wat electric heater to get the place hot as the roof vents are open as snowmobile gear drys,,, Ha.

Venting moisture is a must, it rises, so open vents to let it out.

The best drying rack is under the hood of the truck, so tarp strap city as anything wet went under hood, only takes a hour or 2 depending on the winter front to keep the heat under hood too dry stuff. Best out door drying tool ever.

That way a person is not bringing moisture into trailer.

The puzzle too the trailer was access to wild cat areas and gas moving it around, so the trailer idea ended as I returned too truck cab living system.

That's when all of BC became my play ground,,, less Pemberton and Vancouver Island as my body said no as my pumpkin said yes,,, LOL. Poor old worn down back won that battle.

The cabin with wheels idea always improved, and one if interested in it or RV needs to change things here and there too make it easy too work with... "change is good as it adds quality too the outtings".

Another reason for cabin on wheels is its with me any where I work in Western Canada,,, nice to have my bed, quad in box, tools and supplies if needed.

If I see a area I like, I pull over and spend as many days, weeks or months of my choosing to explore it and surrounding areas as well.

Folks do this by motorcycle, but not much fun in the winter time, and being in the lower USA it's sure nice having a home base if things go south...

Some of this is on the."lost in the West thread".

One will know when it's set up right as it opens all of BC up for sled adventures as the funds saved go to gas and endless days of good times.

As mentioned, it's not for everyone, but those of us that like to explore it really opens the door to distant places that we dream about. Turning it into a reality is a plus.

Pal Lem Lamb always glad to throw out ideas that could change how we wish to travel...

PS: REMEMBER,,, half the battle is getting there, once there it's darn near free to hang out as its a small portion of food with lots of gas for sled too explore.

Being there cost very little as the longer you stay the cost go down.

As a skier and a sledder I can say that it doesn't cost any less to go on a ski trip, than sledding. Might not spend money on gas during the day but you spend it else where, lift tickets are way more than a days gas for the sled, it isn't any cheaper to eat or drink, the equipment may be cheaper to start, although a high end ski setup will cost you almost $3000, but you can't sell your 3 year old skis and boots for anything, unlike a sled.

And most of the skiers in Revy, especially on weekends are coming from Alberta and they complain just as much about the prices going up, and how it is due to how many sledders come out now a days ;)

Skiing costs me more per day than sledding. (Minus sled cost)

My truck mileage Calgary-golden isn't much different to go skiing than with sleds on the deck
80-100 bucks for a lift ticket.
Lunch at the on hill pub with a few pints
Few more pints at the hill après
Head into town for supper and more beers at Riverhouse
Hotel costs the same

Sledding is 20-25 trail fee (usually just buy a season trail pass in Golden and Revy so zero)
Beef jerky and muff pot meals for snacks/lunch with beer from the store

My ski outerwear is the same as I use sledding, or more expensive as I don't want to wreck it. Ski boots are way more expensive and I don't wear my snowboard boots sledding unless we are doing snowboard laps, running boards eat the boots

Neither would I call "cheap"
Both I would call worth it and fun

what about daily fuel/oil/etc for the sled....should probably compare that to your daily lift ticket cost

It's 499 a night and includes a 900 sq foot two bedroom 4 beds apartment with a 1250 sq foot heated shop below with airlines workbench big screen tv and bar fridge in the shop. Dryer racks are being built soon for all the gear. shop is heated and the whole building is under HD security cameras.

Feel free to contact me at 403-874-7704 or info@roocan.com

Thanks for your time

I find with the etec I use maybe 30/40 bucks a day gas, some days more but depends on access distance, fuel price, and who is riding that day. Good on oil too

I think I'm a bit off subject with my comment though.
Hotels are getting expensive with no additional services provided

No idea what is causing it or why, but we booked this summer at Peaks Lodge for a family trip (2 families total of 8). Booked the mobile home there. Made sure we wouldn't get kicked out of it since we would be there for 4 nights and someone may want it for the 7. They said no problem, that wouldn't happen, its ours. Called to double check on Sunday, low and hold, we are kicked out into the old motel because they "forgot" that a family has been renting the mobile home every year for a number of years. If thats the case, shouldn't they have booked it last Christmas.

Bottom line, they are getting greedy IMO!

I don't understand the mentality of "I've been paying $XX number of dollars for years and now they want to charge me $XXX, this is outrageous, I am going to give up sledding" lol...okay maybe its not quite like that...but every year its the same complaints.

That's great, you have been getting a great price for a number of years, but the reality is prices should have gone up long ago and now they are going to be at or near the prices they need to be. Do none of you that are complaining travel anywhere else in Canada, NA, the world? ****, I went to visit my brother in Cape Breton this summer and it was near $200 a night with his cooperate discount. A stupid room in Sydney, $200. I couldn't believe it. But I know for a fact that is sometimes the going rate during tourism season in towns that rely on tourism, especially small towns.

The cost of just about everything in BC has gone up in recent years. Hotel chains increase franchise fees, property tax increases, the cost of updating the rooms because some prototypical sledders drag their wet gear and gear bags in across the carpets every weekend then spill booze all over the place and leave pizza in the fridge lol I don't see threads dozens of pages long complaining about the booze prices in Alberta these days. It goes up a few bucks and no one bats an eye because it still needs to get consumed.

I would hate to be a business owner in Revy. I know some of the posters are from there and other smaller ski/sled towns and I know I wouldn't want to deal with it. lol People roll into town every weekend and snow storm expecting the best of everything for the lowest price, the price it has been since 1992 because that's what they feel they are entitled to. Maybe buy trucks, trailers and sleds from that era and you will have lots of money for hotel rooms.

I understand that service levels have gone down with some places and its why I won't even consider staying at some of the mentioned places but if someone spends that much time in Revy and feels they are being gouged what discussions have you had with the owners to establish a preferred rate? If those of you who claim to spend that much money in town do such you should be able to get a discounted rate based on some sort of guaranty that you will be there so often. If its for the Xmas week and that is the only time you are going to be there with the possibility of the family day weekend and you are complaining about the prices, well....lol.

Personally as much as it would be nice to rent a place there for 6 months or whatever it wouldn't work for me as I do not ride just one area but I believe if its only one town you ride from its one of the best solutions if you have a few people. I'll stick to slumming it at whatever hotel I choose for that weekend fully knowing what prices I am expecting ahead of time.

The rental market is almost as bad in Revy. Check out the Stoke List or Revy Rentals on Facebook it's post after post of people looking for places, rooms, closets, couches to rent for the winter. There is a serious shortage of affordable housing in Revy. But yet the good old boy's club at City Hall still oppose affordable condo developments like David Evans is proposing on the way up to the ski hill. But that's a whole other story...

Cost of everything everywhere has gone up its not just a B.C. thing. As revi grows and becomes more of a destination of course the prices will go up. To be honest there are many just as good if not better sledding destinations in many other locations all around B.C.

100% true....but people are like cattle.
I'll ride Revy/Sicamous at times cause its close for me, i can ride all day then go home, but if given the option there are far nicer places to ride in BC.
Revy has done a great job to advertise sledding, while others don't advertise at all. You just have to know.

Revy just doesn't have enough accommodation to meet the demand these days, so prices rise until the demand levels out because people can't afford to stay there anymore. Time to move on to somewhere cheaper.

Ride Revy/ and Kalispel/ whitefish most of the winter and my comparsion..

revy fuel is is double the price, for truck and sled.. Food and drink even after exchange is a marginally cheaper, logging in Montana even over their busy Christmas season is 100$$ a night, and the location we stay in hungry horse is 69$ a night, nice rooms good parking..

We buy sessional trail passes for thirty dollars in Montana, most trails are groomed and kept up very well, there trail system is incredible actually and are all intermingled, as for riding, like Revy when snow is bad, it's not the best but they have many many more trees than Revy and snow is always decent in there longer, I actually love the hungry horse riding because of its difficulty.. Revy is also very good when it's deep, but very open in comparison, and don't last long to set up..defiantly timing is key.... Revys fogs got to be the worst, last year we had more days wasted in fog than good riding days..

Like them both and ride with great guys at either place, but one for me is cheaper and closer.. And that ussally pulls trump
