ive been thinking about the same thing.....

if you buy a diesel its about a $8000 option. If you buy your truck over 5 years at 7% interest that is $1500 interest or $9500 total, which is $160 a month. Are you going to be burning an extra $160 of gas over diesel a month if you got a gasser?

If yes then would you rather have that cash go out the tail pipe or go towards a more expensive truck with better re sale? there is also other factors like oil changes, services, motor noise, and so on that are negatives for a diesel.

I my self really hate how rough 2500 and 3500s are for a daily driver, also hate no auto 4x4. Im hoping when dodge offers the crew 6'6" bed ram later this year it is a heavy half with higher payload cause my crew 5'7" is weak sauce. I really just want what i have now with more payload and a bit longer box.

It ridiculous to buy a truck just to have a deck on it, but when we buy a new house in a year or two its going to be hard to find one that you can park a damn trailer on beside the garage out of site.

Also another perk is i guess dodge offers no diesel charge end of season too??? i think i would swing that way.
You get all and generally more than your $9500 back in resale though. A used 6.0L is dirt cheap whereas the same truck with a duramax is $10k-$15k more.

Pay cash then no interest - Easy
If your buying a truck to pull with then Diesel no question, a gas job can smell a small hill .5 of a km away and start downshifting and burn fuel like a bastard.
I bought a ford raptor to put around in last fall but to actually do something ie: pulling, hauling then its the lifted 6.7 that I use.
Now for a boat or a car then no question 6.2L LS3 gas job.

Is my 2008 dodge 3500 a tank!

Sure! But I just about got rid of it, I disagree with the frt end statement somewhat. Yes you will need to change it out and if you keep putting the same junk back in.. Then yes u will change it again. Lots if great aftermarket products that combat these issues. Some have life time warranty.

I'm fully deleted, chipped bla bla bla ! I pull my 10000 travel trailer from revy to red deer on 130l fuel. Which is right around 13mpg. At 120 kmh could I ever dream of pulling it with a gas at that speed ... You bet you could but let's be honest the life of that gas ... I don't care pick one just got shorter. I've had lots of gas jobs gm, ford great trucks but they just won't survive over time pulling hard. Thus u can say the same for diesel if you jump in run to store shut it off you'll kill it over time to! PS it makes me laugh how a diesel guy will idle his truck in the winter for two hours and says its a diesel but in the summer race all over the city and then blast into 7-11 and shut it off!
I have poured a ton $ into my truck some necessary some just cause it old guy cool like the topper! Lol
Diesels can be expensive but so can gas. It's hard to compare because your not apples to apples. I say drive both see what ya like. I pulled our sled trailer with my brother in laws Eco boast a couple months ago. I was very impressed how it pulled. If I only pulled a trailer "7000#" a couple times a year.. I would look real hard at that truck, very nice ride. Very nice truck. I hope none of my Ford F@g friends read this as ill never hear the end of it.

Nice truck. I'm thinking in a couple years when my 1/2 ton is paid for, picking up a couple year old Duramax, for the sake of travel trailer, sled trailers. We like to camp a lot and would like to upgrade the 28' in five years or so. My questions is this:

Who the f would buy a F350 gas job? Anyone? A friend of mine just bought a 2013, and I think it is probably the most moronic thing ever. He said he bought the one ton so he could put a 500cc quad in the back and pull his 6500# travel trailer three times a year. Seems foolish to me....Especially for mid 50K. Am I right, could this be the dumbest truck purchase ever?

Well...... This should start a chit show! IMO I don't know why they even make 3/4 tons?? They ride the same as a 1 ton with less payload? How many times ya hear my 3/4 ton won't haul that??

Ok, maybe should have clarified, it seems like an odd purchase, given what he is going to use it for. The max payload this thing is going to have on it is a Sportsman 500. I'm not saying they don't have their application, it just seems odd to buy a gas one ton, to pull a trailer that most half tons could handle, and not have anything heavy to go in the box.....that's all.

Same thing I was thinking a halfway with the tow package would haul that all day legally and ride wayyyyyyy nicer

But more options are open for him now. Eg. Two quads on deck and bigger trailer. Just sayin

Yea true about the deck, bigger trailer. For that dough, I would pony up the extra for the diesel, and have double the torque at way lower RPM's and make my HP at lower rpm too. Not only that but be able to pull 2000 ish more #'s.

And the longevity of diesel. I'm not sure how long the powerstrokes are lasting but it's gotta be wayyy longer than a gas job. Really the half ton Ecoboost claims to be able to pull a 11000'ish # trailer. That ain't much less than this one ton gas job. For the payload he is going to pack, it would make more sense, plus a nicer ride.

I agree. There is no need for the 3/4 ton IMO. They should just offer the diesel option of some sort in all the half tons and then go to a 1 ton.
Dodge did the right thing by cutting out the Dakota. Now they may as well cut out the 3/4 ton as well cuz the 1/2ton sales with a diesel will go up and replace the 3/4 ton previous sales.

As previously mentioned, if your gonna tow more than 5-6000lbs go with a diesel.
Otherwise a gas jobber will get it done.

That said, my lifted '07 2500HD Duramax gets better mileage, tows better and is no more expensive to run than my company truck which is an '09 2500 HD 6.0l gasser. Both CCSB HD trucks. I hate towing heavy with the gasser. My 9000lb toy hauler got a solid 7mpg at 100km/h-no headwind-last time I pulled it. Dmax gets at least 12. Downside is purchase price of the diesel is more. And fuel is more-unless you get it for free like I did for 3 or 4 years.

I don't agree with the diesel service claims of being a ridiculous amount more. My Dmax costs $129 at Mr. Lube with semi-syn oil that I buy from walmart and supply (no fuel filter which is only $20 for a CAT 1R-0750) and my Gasser cost $69 with bulk oil. That $129 includes my oil cost. And I run 10K between services on the dmax and 5K on the gasser so you tell me which costs more in the long run? (Both trucks have cleanable and re-usable air filters)
If your paying $300 to get your oil changed in a diesel your getting bent over.

No way. My 3/4 gmc rides like a Cadillac compared to a new dodge 3500. Maybe it's a dodge gm thing but there is a huge difference. Would never buy a 1 ton for that reason. Spending all day in my vehicle that would drive me insane

I would guess in this region the breakdown is about 25% of pickups are half ton, 50% are 3/4 ton and 25% are one ton.

3/4 ton's ride much better than 1 ton's and stand up better than half ton's. Payloads aren't the only reason to buy a pickup.

Your not comparing apples to apples. Jump in a gm 1 ton. Alot of the time they are the same wheels same diff, same spring just the 1 ton has a bigger overload. I'm not saying they are identical. But it's so fricken close y bother! Go to the ford store.. It's tough to buy a 3/4 ton for that reason. They are the same truck, or close! See I knew this would fire people up!

A gm 3/4 to 1 ton is just 1 ton have overloads. 3/4 do not.

Brakes are not much different either between the 2 unless Ur into a dulley

May long weekend...........

Gas 122.9
Diesel 110.9

Jasper to Edmonton towing 28 foot trailer, 110 km/hr in a head wind, on one tank of diesel.

Priceless.

On Wednesday of last week gas went to 142.9 just in time for the long weekend, today, Tuesday after the long weekend it dropped to 135.9.

Not trying to gouge the general public are they.
