Blue River Snow Report for December/07

I am headed to Blue River for some sledding this Saturday, and Sunday, with my cousin and a few others - my first time there. Thanks for the posts on the snow/road conditions, they are greatly appreciated. I will be checking back before I leave here to see what I can expect out of Jasper.

HI Thanks for coming to Blue River this weekened...
The weather here has been Nuts...
At Midnight last night it was +3 and now it is -10 Wierd...
Should be some Wicked Powder Up Top !!

Alpine - Considerable
Treeline- Considerable
Below Treeline- Moderate

Avalanche Activity...In the Southern part of the Region, Natural or spontaneous, avalanches have occured on all aspects and elevations in response to loading from new Snow

Road Conditions

Winter Driving Conditions ...Use Extreme Caution

Take Care driving the Hi-Ways this weekend...

Watch for Black Ice , Slipprey Sections, Light Compact, Elevated Corners !!

They are Sanding and Salting .......

It can be +2 all day and by nightfall the Road tightens Up when it falls below 0 C.

Treeline......Considerable
Below Treeline.....Moderate

Natural,or Spontaneous, Avalanche Activity is expected to taper off, now that the Storm has passed; however, the possibility of natural Avalanches and the likelihood of People triggering Avalanches will remain.

If this changes, I will keep you posted

Avalanche Forecast

Alpine ...Considerable

Treeline...Considerable

Below Treeline...Moderate

Just be Aware of Afternoon Warming, on those Freshly Loaded Steep South Faces, and Cornices as this is the first direct Sun after a Week of Dark Weather.

Once the Fractures get going they were propgating widely.
Whumphing was Observed from Skiers, Large Size 3 Avalanches were Triggered Remotely with Large Triggers such as Helicopters, Explosives and Cornice Falls.

Snowpack....

The Crusts from the high Freezing Level are reported to start around 1900m

Below 1500 meters there is almost No new Snow sitting on that now Frozen Crust.

Travel Advisory...

No one is really sure when the Nov.24 surface Hoar Layer is going to Stregthen. Be Cautious of Terrain that has not Avalanched Yet !!

The Main Concern for the next Three Days is the Potential to Trigger Large Avalanches from Steep Rocky Terrain or Areas with a Thin Snowpack.

Use Lower Angle Terrain Overall and minimize Your Exposure to Cornices above or other Large Triggers such as Groups of Skiers or Sledders !!

Stop by the Holy Smoke Inn if Your in Town and We will have some X-Mas Cheer with you all !! Let Us know how the Dance went !!!

Its pretty crusty all the way up ....We had a Group here this wekend and they said Not much Powder Up there....

But it is Overcast right now and it is supposed to start snowing in the next few days it started snowing earlier but not to much came of that.

Keep checking back as I will post The Minute we have Powder at any Elevation !! ...LOL

Travel Advisory....

The Primary concern for those Traveling in Avalanche Terrain continues to be the Nov. 24 Surface Hoar Layer. This Layer all though widespread, is not currently producing a large number of Avalanches.BUT The Avalanches it has produced has Fractured as deep as 95cms. down and propogated widely!
They are Large enough to Bury a Person!
Be Aware of what is Above You , Avoid exposures to large Triggers such as Cornices or Groups.Be Aware of what is Below You, if a Avalanche does occure will you be swept into a Terrain Trap ??

Avalanche Activity....

Back-country users have been traveling widely in Avalanche Terrain in recent days with few reported incidents,however signs of increasing snowpack strength have been contradicted by infrequent but large Human Triggered Avalanches. This suggest that there are " Significant " weekness in the Snowpack which have a spotty distribution, and inconsistent reactivity which is difficult to predict!

Snowpack....

The Snowpack consists of loose upper snow which is sluffing on Steep Terrain.The Dec.4 Rain Crust is buried up to 35cms. at Treeline.( Less deeply below Treeline.)
The Nov.24 surface Hoar remains a significant concern at All Elevations when Triggered it has been propogating widely creating large Avalanches.
Skiers and Sledders should be Vigilant for indicators of this instability such as deep settlement or whumps.


The Current Cold Weather is forecast to Change

It is -9 in Blue River right now

Calling for Snow Tomorrow and the next few days Temperature to run from -6 to -3 .....

If anything changes I will post again.
