Blue River received about 8" of Snow in Town in the last 24 Hours...

I can only Imagine what is up Top !!!

It is Pretty Darn Warm here today....+1....WATCH THE AVALANCHE !!!

With these Warmer Temp. the Avalanche will Certainly rise to " HIGH "

Please Play Safe & Smart !!

Stay out of the STEEP Stuff and Play in the Trees and Medows...also a Great Time for some Road Rididng ...I know ..thats No Fun ...BUT ....It is better to be SAFE then SORRY !

Blue River had a Temp. of +1 Today....YIKES !! ...Thats Insane for the Middle of January !!

WOW ....

BIG AVALANCHES !!

A naturalAvalanche Big enough to bury a truck was observed in the North Columbia region.

ASize 3.5 ( large enough to bury a truck ) natural slide occured near Valemount fracturing 1.5 meters deep. Observers in the Region also reported naturally occuring Avalanches in the upper portions of the Snowpack involving layers 20cms. to just over 1 meter deep ( wind slab , freezing rain crusts , and poorly bonded new snow interfaces. ) These events are mostly on northerly aspects and treeline and in Alpine !

I just talked to a Couple of Sledders and they rode Groundhog ( Finn Creek )

They sais it is sort of Tracked up ....

They also said they were in a " HONEST " 1 1/2 Ft. of Powder today !

I am not sure about Murtle Coulies ???

I will try and get more info. out ....

POW-WOW is down with a NASTY Cold ....( Lovley ) Sun is shining and His New Dragon is calling Him ....Poor Guy ....

They are calling for 10-20cms. for Thursday/Friday....

So lets ALL Pray to " ULAR " .....

Avalanche Forecast.....Travel Advisory.....

The Common theme for the North Columbia last week was Wind.

High Northerly winds created Hard and soft Slabs almost everywhere ! But this week those Slabs have NOT gone away ! In fact they are in a Prime situation to catch People off Guard , because the loading is on the SW Aspects-the opposite of what You may be used to.

In Many Places , these Wind Slabs rest on a Layer , on Large easy to Trigger Snow Crystals down 40-50 cms.

So, this week , watch out for Surface Slabs in the Alpine and Treeline.

The usual suspects remain : shallow, Rocky Areas, gullies and depressions, Rolls , and of course Cornices !

The early December Crust and Facet combo still exist near the base of the Snowpack, and if a Wind Slab or Cornice falls , it could break down to these deep layers , causing a much Larger than expected Avalanche !

Snowpack.....

Intense North wind over the last several Days have created a variety of Hard and Soft Slabs in the Alpine and at Treeline. This is opposit to Our normal pattern of SW winds, so wind Slabs will be foundon slopes that are Normally scoured or thin. Near the Ground , the Dec. 5 Crust and facets remain intact, and still provide a potential sliding layer for Large Avalanches !

In shallow snowpack areas, sugary, unconsolidated snow sits on the ground, providing a significant weakness !

Weather....

The ridge of High Pressure will remain until Thursday. The Northern part of the forecast area may experiance a temperature inversion brining in Mild(+3) temperatures locally near Treeline. The rest of the forecast area will remain cool, dry , and Sunny.

Sunny aspects may experience Very warm Temperatures, in the absence of Wind , A upper trough will approach the area on Thursday , spreading light Snowfall on most areas.

OK....Avalanche Forecast...

Forecast of Avalanche Danger....

The Concerns are ...

1. Slabs in the Alpine and at Treeline !

2. Loose snow Avalanches at ALL Elevations where Terrain Traps exist !

3. At and below Treeline in shallow snowpack areas, a facet on crust persistent weak layer buried in early December. Avalanche is rated based on about 25cms. of new snow and little windslab formation over the last few days.

Temp. in Blue River..... -38 that is insane !!!
