I just bought a few Baofeng GT-3TP radios. TP stands for tri power 1/4/8 watts. Got them as a package with mikes and a USB programming cable. I am using CHIRP to program them. I need to get some more frequencies for the most common forestry channels. I will have my radios programmed for FRS, GMRS, Ladd, weather, forestry (when i find them) and maybe a few police channels to use as a scanner.

Also it is possible to program these radios with the tones or privacy codes ( sub channel ) to work with the FRS/GMRS radios.

Oh by the way I bought from China through ebay with excellent shipping time and free shipping. Here is who I bought from

We also need keep in mind that some FRS channels should be limited to low wattage (by law) while the GMRS channels are limited to higher wattage. Channels 1-7 are FRS / GMRS and are limited to 5 watts output, Channels 8 - 14 are FRS channels only and are limited to 0.5 watts, Channels 15 - 22 are limited to 50 watts. So I most likely want to use channels 15 - 22 on 8 watts.

Is the antenna on these too delicate for use in a backpack?

I just got them and have not used them in the hills yet but the antenna is very flexible. They can be bent so the ends touch. So ya they should be fine. They say they work better than the other rubber type ones but there are even better antennas you can buy.

Ok, thanks. There are so many models of these radios, it's hard to know which one to purchase.

I am thinking of selling the Baofeng uv82 models if there is enough interest. Post here or PM me if you are interested. Mine are working out pretty good.

Also have the (5) x uv82hp

works great so far. Also got the premium speaker/mic and clip to my pack.

Can hear it pretty good even when riding. Would only be interested in the helmet kit if it disconnects easy so you don't have to f' around when putting your helmet on and off.

Ordered from beofengtech, but the exchange is brutal. Got them in a week though!

so how many channels can these radios hold? I'm looking for something for quadding/sledding/hiking, but also to maybe use on overseas trips (last time I was in mexico I saw a group with cheap walkie talkies and it seemed way easier to keep track of everybody). I would probably rarely (if ever) use any FRS frequencies or anything like that so I'm not sure if I should get something like these or maybe just something more traditional like a cobra?

Like Vance said 128 channels. With these radios you can program the frs/gmrs channels onto them. In Canada these channels are free to use as long as you have the radios set on low power. Other channels that can be programmed onto them require a licence to use them. I stick to using the frs/gmrs channels. These radios work much better than the traditional cobra type radios.

As I was reading the posts in this thread I kept thinking to myself, "are people licensed to use this radio?", and I got to your reply which answered some of my question. However, the rest of my question is, what license(s) do you need to have in order to legally operate the UV-5 (et al) radio?

Additionally, what in-helmet speaker(s) are people referencing/using with this radio?

Answered my own question with regards to the license: https://www.snowandmud.com/gps-and-...list-chirp-image-sledding-baofeng-radios.html
