I wish the ill a speedy recovery. If anyone has any information as to the location where the illness may have originated (lodging, hot tub, steam room, etc,) you can call the Environmental Health Office in Prince George at 250-565-2150. All public recreational water facilities in Valemount are routinely inspected and submit monthly water samples to be analysed for bacteria. Inspection reports of these facilities can be viewed at Northern Health Public Health Protection .

We are scheduled to arrive in Valemount Jan.18 for the Rasmussen Ride and this obviously has me concerned. So here is what I have done to try and protect myself and my friends. We are staying at the BestWestern. I have called there this morning and spoke to them. The lady I spoke with was very informative and was very well aware of the situation. I asked straight out if they were the affected hotel and was told no. So this sets my mind at ease now.

I hope for a fast recovery of anyone affected. If simple Codes and standards as outlined by the Canadian National Plumbing Code were applied and followed this would be totally avoidable. Unfortunetley many provinces are very slow at adpoting new codes at the provincal level and events like this occur.

Jesus... Whats with you guys and the best western!??? Its not the birthplace of jesus! lol. You are SUPER CONCERED......You think shes going to be like... ACTUALLY Yes we are affected.. Please dont stay here! Instead she tells you....Nope...everythings fine here!... and your like......................"Ok cool be right there!". J/S.... I dont think you want to take someones word for that if you are as worried as you say you are.......Somebody that works for that hotel that is concerned for thier business is NOT going to give you a straight answer I dont care WHO they are. IMO

Im just saying.... STAY OUT OF THE HOT TUBS FOR A BIT UNTIL THEY FIGURE THIS OUT! Its not a big god damn deal. Im just saying dont go putting the spotlight on ONE place! It bugs me that the Wal-Mart (Best Western) of valemount always gets all the attention.

that's a good read, there are too many pages to convert and post here though. Interesting that they say air conditioning is not a transmission source, that is where i had always heard that legionnaires' was most prevalent. We treat our ac cores in the trucks with a minty smelling aerosol spray that kills bacteria, every spring before we fire them up for the first time. That info pack actually says they believe that transmission is mainly from accidentally getting water into your lungs (like taking a drink and it goes down the wrong pipe) instead of breathing in steam or mist. Seems a little odd, as i wonder how many people actually do that at one time and place such as the philadelphia outbreak in 1976 when it was first discovered, when 221 people contracted the disease and 34 died. That's a lot of people accidentally getting water down the "wrong pipe" at once. Not every body does that, but everybody certainly breathes.

i learned something too........ I always thought legionnaires disease was mostly through the a/c units as well.....it's like mustard gas? Freon(r12) with flame forms a type of mustard gas, which they taught us in school will cause legionnaires disease........??? HOPING FOR A SPEEDY RECOVERY FOR THE SICK........

Well I have been just creeping this thread for awhile and not commenting, I was sledding in Valemount on the 28th 29th and 30th with my family (Wife and 2 boys) Well I got so sick on the day of the 29th that I quit riding half way through the day, I could not get warm, massive headache, and felt like I was hit by Yamaha, But I kinda pushed it off as a hangover (The worst I ever had and I didn't even get very drunk the night before) So we decide to go home on the morning of the 30th, Both my boys ended up sick, one of them in the hospital on new years eve with the Croup, getting steroids and Anti Biodics, so this brings us to present day, Me and My Boys a all still quite sick, not to the extent we were but still ill none the less, One of my co-workers was telling of his Cousins son who was sledding in Valemount over christmas and got the above mention illness and is in the hospital, I now have a appointment to go see the Doc, hopefully it is just a bad cold, but if its not I will def post the name of the hotel I stayed at. Hopefully a speedy recovery to everyone affected

Hoping for a speedy and full recovery for all involved in this, definitely makes a person think twice before jumping into a public pool or hot tub!

Special Notice:

The information on this will be released when it is actually confirmed. We have pulled the other thread until this is confirmed. It is however confirmed that one of the members has contracted Legionnaires Disease and he was in Valemount and got sick there, but the source has not been confirmed. It is only known that it is it is believed to originate in Valemount, BC. These threads were posted by members not to differ you from traveling to Valemount but were only information saying to stay out of the hot tubs until this issue was looked into further by the proper authorities.

Its not just from HOT TUBS. Go and read the link on kidders post. This guy knows what he is talking about. Its not a big god damn deal. How about it is a big gad damn deal. If this was one of your friends I am sure there would be a different tone in your voice.

Ya it happened about ten years ago, He was on a cruse ship in the caribbean and he got sick after some hot tub fun ( others got sick as well ) and never recovered. I cringe everytime I see people in a hot tub--You never know where the've been!!

It made the Global Edmonton news finally tonight as well.

They did say that the chance of catching it is quite low, but nonetheless. Still scary.

I havent gone in a hottub after sledding for a couple years now. We usually ride too late and barely make it back for supper. After supper, we are too drunk and disorderly and would probably get kicked out of the hottub anyway, so we never go. Just saying

hoping all people sick get better..

i was also up there at the same time and am concerned just as many others too..

i have been cold symtoms for a month so not to concerned for myself

i was not in any hot tubs or pools as i am too fat for them and usally too bagged out to go in anyways.lol

i will still sled valemount as i have for the last 6 years, several times a month, just have to stay a little more safer in what i do.

i know for a fact there is way, WAY dirtier places out there that i have slept in,camps,hotels,floors.. but if one feels they should not go to valemount then so be it.. mc bride and blue river would love the support..

i will be watching closely to the situation and hope for the best to all involved..

I too pray for the health of all involved. I think this type of situation can and does happen in many places where there are communal type bathing facilities. Hot tubs, pools, etc... I remember being in the middle of calgary at a very fancy hotel before I had my wisdom teeth pulled. Decided to take a dip in the pool with the kids, and low and behold a floating piece of poop meandered by. Total lack of sanitation.. Valemount will probably end up being the most hygienic of all destinations because of this situation. More awareness has also been triggered helping all of us stay safe, and helping owners and maintainers of hot tubs and pools more conscious of proper sanitation methods. Again I am so sad that people have been hurt.

Momma :)

Ya that is very true, with all this floating around the news, it will clean all of Valemount up and make it an overall better place. Even though it still is an amazing place and sad this had to happen but you take your wins with your loses and hopefully everything turns out for the positive in the short and long run. And hopefully all the sick get better soon so they do not miss out on the good snow conditions. :d Best of luck to everyone and hope this news does not discourage people from Valemount or other riding area's, just to be safer and think twice before doing anything that can risk your health. Other then sledding and drinking.
