I too pray for the health of all involved. I think this type of situation can and does happen in many places where there are communal type bathing facilities. Hot tubs, pools, etc... I remember being in the middle of calgary at a very fancy hotel before I had my wisdom teeth pulled. Decided to take a dip in the pool with the kids, and low and behold a floating piece of poop meandered by. Total lack of sanitation.. Valemount will probably end up being the most hygienic of all destinations because of this situation. More awareness has also been triggered helping all of us stay safe, and helping owners and maintainers of hot tubs and pools more conscious of proper sanitation methods. Again I am so sad that people have been hurt.

I see lots of comments about the cleanliness of Valemount, That is definatly my last concern when visiting Valemount, This can happen to anyone, anyplace, I have snowmobiled, worked and stayed in lots of Places, some not so good, but none of those not so good places were in Valemount, this will definatly not stop me from going to Valemount or most of the other snowmobile towns I visit. Most of these places thrive on sledder buisness and always try to accomadate and impress. This is unfortunate and to bad for everyone envolved. Get Well Everyone

Yeah the boys are at the doctor right now I was not able to get out of work today so I am heading in tomorrow, although I feel quite a bit better today, my boys were still quite sick. Really hoping it is just a bad flu bug

Hope all affected people make a full recovery and i also hope these hotels take this seriously and take the time to double check their own tubs and pools to ensure that this doesn't happen again. Its really sad it takes something like this to make them aware when so many people travel through and use their facilities.

I almost never post but as an accommodation owner just outside of Valemount I want to send a message to all of you who are talking about the illnesses you have experienced since being in our area: for EVERYONE'S sake contact the Northern Health Board here and let them know! If they don't know there's an issue it will NEVER get solved. 250-566-2150
Secondly: We need you to keep coming here, you are our winter business and we sure as hell don't want to lose you so if you've had a problem you need to let us know too.
Third: Hot tubs are a nightmare, everyone knows it. This poor dude in the coma may have got the bacteria from a hot tub but that's still not confirmed, in fact, nothing has really been confirmed at all yet while we wait for more info. The Health Board is in town now and conducting the investigation at the hotels that have been brought to their attention with this tragic circumstance.
Finally, remember that this is, so far, an isolated case of this particular disease. I found out earlier from the guy who runs the paper here that there were initially two cases reported but it turned out that when the guy was admitted to the hospital in Edmonton two files on him were opened by mistake so they then thought there were 2 dudes. They were WRONG. It is extremely unlikely (if you think about it) that if this were a hot tub in Valemount at Christmas that only 1 guy would get the bacteria? I'm just trying to be realistic and not buy into too much media hype before the truth is brought to light. If it was an isolated bacteria the truth is that we may never know where it came from.

My most sincere wishes for a speedy recovery are extended to the man in the hospital, Valemount hopes to see you come back soon!

I think and hope I can speak for all the sledders that I know, that this incident will not keep us from coming to your guys town. I realize that this is an isolated case and very unfortunate! I sled in lots of different places and vale is my favorite. And I wish a speedy and full recovery to the poor guy who is sick!

Well I finally made it to see the doc yesterday, explained my situation with the three of us that were in Valemount. He tells me that it sounds like a bad case of the flu, but will do some research and let me know if he finds anything out. So I leave there thinking I wont hear anything from him. Well about a half an hour later he calls me on my cell and says that he has read a few articles on the Valemount situation. So things suddenly get a little more serious and he says he will see what the protocal is for me to get some blood work done for this type of situation. Have not recieved a call yet so not sure what to think, maybe it is too late for any kind of blood test? I cant say for sure what it was that I had or where I got it from without confirmation from a doc, but what ever it was, I hope I never experience that again. This incident will not prevent me from going back to Valemount as I have been snowmobiling there for 26 years and no intention of stopping.I have a trip planned for the 20-23 of Jan, work permitting, and looking forward to having a much better weekend than the last.

I will still sled there been going there for 14 years and have no intention of stopping now. I was there also through the xmas break with my Son and when we got back we were both under the weather. This did raise some concern when I heard about it but we have been home for well over a week now so I would say we are home free. I have 8 buddies that left for there at 2 in the morning. There was nothing going to stop them from going. The community does a great job of hosting us sledders.

Well, well, well! About 30 minutes ago the Northern Health Authority declared that the hotel and all other potential causes for this bacterial infection in Valemount are CLEARED. There were no traces of the bacteria found after a thorough investigation and now they've all left. If you want to read more about it look at The Valley Sentinel on line (local newspaper) or call Northern Health directly at 250-565-2150.

As I stated in my earlier post if you ever have an illness or infection that you think may have been contracted at a hotel or restaurant you need to do something productive about it that may work to solve the problem. Call the establishment, call the health board, see your doctor and get it sorted out before some small town gets irreversibly damaged by irresposible media reporting.

As also stated I and every other person here in the hospitality industry send our most heartfelt wishes for a fast recovery to the sledder in the coma. We hope to see you soon!
cheers,
s.

Valemount will continue to get my business. It's good to see all establishments play by the rules and continue to be service oriented. Hopefully the town will not be tarnished with false accusations. My thoughts are with the fellow and his family who remain in the hospital.

just an observation but the sledder was coma induced on the 2 of jan. health authorities gave the all clear on the 11 of jan. hmm, something sounds fishy, takes 4 or so days for symptoms to appear, hmm. about 2 weeks for the authorities to investigate, does a guy have to die before something happens, 2 weeks = lots of time to flush the system and clean it up. you guys still feel the government has your best interest at heart. linksys, you still feel all warm and fuzzy now. shheeet give me a break.

moral of the story, stay out of hot tubs, especially those that have a strong clorine smell.
