I understand where doo'in is comming from....

the issue is not with the units thmselves, it's in the sales pitch, I was asked the same thing..."what is your life worth" and when I took my SOS F1ND to my avy training I was told I should "throw it away because it is useless"

funny that model has been used by many for years and was at one point considered one of the best...

I understand technology improves with time, and the newer digital beacons are more user friendly BUT...

When Goodyear introduces a new and improved Blizzak tire do you take the ones you have now with 90% tread and chuck them... obviously the newer technoligy is better and lets face it your tires are the only thing between you and the road...

If there is a "new and improved" tide laundry detergent why do thewy still sell the original????

I go to the mountains 1-3 times per year, ride an older cheap sled, buy most of my chit used because between the 4 kids University costs are gonna run me my life savings and a kidney, love sledding but I can't justify dropping $500 on the new and improved when I can practice with the older model I picked up for $150....

but according to some I "might as well not even have one"

I know you wanna sell the new models but don't lie to people...

BTW.... Best Western Valemount still rents the SOS F1ND beacons, obviously thier lawyers have not found this to be a liability......

Very valid points in this thread. It's a good one.

I don't care for all the bs either but have followed the thread. Imdoo'n is a wizard with words and I have a tough time following if I don't read carefully or slowly!

I have being using beacons for only 10 years. First the SOS, then the Tracker. Both were acting "different" and my research and listening told me that some of the older beacons have trouble with the antenna material shrinking due to "old age" resulting in less distance in both the transmit and receive modes.

It stands to reason that the more they are used, the more wear and tear they experience. I have retired 2 SOS and 1 Tracker; won't even use them for spares incase someone in the group forgot a beacon! Yes, I could have sent them away to be repaired but how much is my life or my wife's life, or my buddies life worth? Sound like the salesman? Hope not, just a conscience mountain rider who has strapped on the beacon over 60 times this season.

We now use the Pulse and Tracker2. When the first Tracker was acting funny, I sent it away and the quoted price of a new one from them (or a replacement) was too good to refuse. They are good beacons.

Really enjoy my Pulse! That's a good thing......

you said it well bogger thanxs.

just saw a blurb on the pieps site about a new beacon (pieps vector) looks promising, 80m range 4 antenna, will pick the best orientation of transmitting antenna to transmit on. pricey, but as they say you don't want to lose your friends, and i know i would feel crappy if i didn't do all i could to get them out. hope never have to.

i must apologize to charlie sheen and LA, i didn't realize kgr lived in big time lacombe(LA), and wasn't that well known.

to summ up i have more reading to do. :d

you are right, no sense in throwing money into an old unit, better to upgrade. as bogger says, if it still works and you have practice using it, it is still useable. it is the same as upgrading to a new sled, hard to spend the money if it still works. but in my defense i want a new beacon, and a digital one. just looking for honesty.

Not too sure I believe that the antenna shrinks from old age. Sales BS?

Trust me antenna shrinkage is a serious problem. But as long as your well practiced it may prevent you from being replaced with a newer model

The transmitter consists of wires wrapped around a ferrite core. It is possible that this would degrade over time. This would lead to less induction and less signal transmitted.

you may be right or wrong really doesn't matter as all beacons will have the same problem, but i think rough handling would do more damage than any degradation that might happen. again another sales intimidation gimmick,

I'm wondering does that particular salesperson ever go out in the back country? Does that salesperson, replace their own beacon every two years?

Sounds like hookey sales talk to me! Definitely BS!

I have found if you use technology enough (GPS, SPOT, beacons) it doesn't take long to get better than most of the salespersons.
