Sled deck on 1/2 ton?

My neighbour works for D.O.T. You nailed this 100%.
He has told me the air bags may make you look legal and therefore may not bring attention to yourself (Unless they are looking for overweight 1/2 tons specifically which they have been lately) But if you wreck you are toast!
By " they" I mean RCMP. D.O.T. doesn't usually get involved with none commercial vehicles unless involved in a road side blitz.

UGH COME ON PEOPLE THIS^^^^^^^^ is not safe air bags and HD springs don't legally increase payload of your truck it may not sag like a pig but compared to my 3500 it will drive and stop like one. Also you may be F***ED if you get in a wreck and your that overloaded because your insurance could argue that the truck was out side its max approved weight range.

Not picking on you specifically bud theres lots that do this but when you think about the amount of fuel your burning and the fact that your beating the HELL out of your truck (brakes,Ball joints, bearings, suspension, CV's etc) just buy a trailer and save the decks until you can afford to run one safely on a truck that's meant for the weight.

That's why I ran a Toyota 1/2 ton. The disc breaks are the same size as an Ford F350. I ran the same setup on my 2007 tundra 1/2 ton and traded it with 215,000km and still had factory front break and never had to replace front ends. With the cost of gas last season in the 80 cent range it was cheaper to run my gas 1/2 ton then it was to take my buddies 1 ton diesel (ford). This year it would be different. And being able to afford it was not an issue. I had more into my tundra then most diesels. I know it was not smart of me but I am a Toyota fan and wanted to be different. I also have an enclosed trailer but I prefer the deck for the quick trips and the late spring trips. Say what you want about being safe I still disagree. I was no more unsafe then the next 1 ton on the road with a deck.

You are Sir correct about insurance. If I was to get into an accident I would not be covered. And pulled over I most defiantly get fined.

The size of the brakes and how big they look is all fine and dandy but what is the GVWR of the truck. This AND ONLY THIS is what matters....

For the record my 2015 ford platinum with max tow has a payload of 1517lbs. To get the 2600lbs you need to have a very specific model and features truck to do so. A deck is not in my future.

I get the overloaded argument but do you really think that being 250# over the GVW is going to make the difference between making it to Revy safely and crashing? There's a few oil field and log haulers on here, ask them about overweights lol.

Probably not but the point is if you do wipe out they can/will use it against you. The law is not negotiable. You are either legal, or you are not.

Absolutely, the law is black and white. However, life is not and I'll continue to apply my own common sense to situations such as this. Done responsibly I am a lot less worried about two sleds on a half ton than I am about the guy with a 6"+ lift on 37"+ mud tires trying to save a half hour on his trip to the mountains.

Just trying to help. One would think being as you live in BC where they are cracking down super heavy on this kind of stuff you would want to comply. The way things are going and the checks they are doing its not a matter of if you get caught its when you will be caught. I'll keep an eye out for the rage post when you do :cool::PDT_hah:

I'm going to be selling my crew cab Silverado 4x4 here right away..... It's an HD with 8 bolt wheels so she's good for a deck......
Will it need airbags.

take any truck you are thinking of buying to a weigh scale. get the weight of front and rear axles, subtract te umbers rom the numbers on the vehicle sticker. this will be the max weight you can carry. you can estimate the weight of what you carry-2-sled-2 guys-gas-sled deck-gas(truck-sleds-jerry cans) equipment-tools etc. don't forget ice n snow build upon truck and machines. estimate higher than you think. if you are not under by a couple hundred pounds you will be overweight and can be fined.
In Alberta they use tire weight ratings, BC axle ratings? i have weighed 1 tons that where very marginal! don't listen to salesman unless he is going to pay the fines. not likely. always fun listening to there BS.

But what if I slap on a set of air bags and don't take any extra gas? I should be good right!

I also had a 170L titan tank to fuel this pig so I didn't have to stop every 350km @32L per 100. But with the airbags and heavy duty springs etc it doesn't even look like a half ton (minus the short box)

I'm not much of a rager and I've never had two sleds on my half ton. It's a risk I'm willing to take when the time comes, if not I would have bought another HD truck. 90% of the time my truck is a glorified car and 99% of the time I'm only hauling one sled.

Well I've kept all there is to say to the Toyota guy, and hope I never see the truck or meet him on the road



Just plain dumb to add HD springs and airbags and think it's just the big brakes that make ok


What does the wheels and springs bolt too dumb azz, the axle tube, mabe out of Coors light Chinese beer cans

There are blinded people everywhere nowadays
