Shopping with a sled

I used to live in a town in Manitoba which has a bylaw allowing sleds on the streets during exceptional circumstances. For example if there was a major snow dump with blowing wind that brought the town to a halt. If council/major declared a local state of emergency, sleds could be used to go for groceries, to the hospital, etc.
Has anyone experienced something like this? Even better do you have pictures to "prove"? Smaller towns up north probably have that as a norm every winter.

In Elkford, BC you can legally ride from your house to the trail system throughout and around the town. You require a town permit/registration and insurance. The gas stations were on the trail system and you could fill up. In the early days (before I got there) maybe the grocery store was okay but I'm not sure.

When we lived in the NWT, we drove our sleds all winter throughout the town; to work, to the stores, etc.. We didn't even require registration nor insurance.

this happened in Winnipeg and Detroit that I know of.

Where I grew up in Eastern Sask it was fully legal to ride anywhere in town during winter provided the machine was licensed. I had months during high school where I never drove a vehicle aside from sled and finished winters with more than 8000 miles from mid Nov- mid March

When I lived in Slave Lake our neighbor would sled on an almost nightly basis from his house, through the south end of town to the trails. It wasn't allowed, but the RCMP detachment was a block away from our house, they didn't care.

In fox vegas you can ride your stuff from your house swing by the gas station then hit the trails or ditch bang you just can be hot rodding around like a fool is all...

West Jellystone is open to town sledding. Would ride for brekky everymorning to a restraunt and even did the McDonalds drive thru one night for a burger and fries.

We can ride in whitecourt as well, to the trail from house and around the outskirts of town, dec1-march 31, also they look the other way on riding to the gas station to fuel up as well, never had them give me grief about it and have saw my share of cops drive by while fueling at the shell

Where I come from in MB (Steinbach), there's a separate bylaw allowing you to ride the sled slowly on the shoulder of the road from your house to the nearest trail. But during before mentioned state of emergency, you could ride through town to run errands. That would be cool, comverting some old skis to a pull-behind sleigh and go shopping

Interesting, I actually didn't know this isn't normal, here in New Brunswick we sled everywhere, grocery stores, restaurants, fast food, Canadian Tire, gas stations, Walmart, everywhere, hell i even drive my sled to the gym sometimes.

At one time you could also ride your snowmobile or atv from your residence in Sylvan Lake down to the lake and return in the winter months. As long as you had a DL, insurance and registration. Used to see a fair few snowmobiles and atvs parked on the beach along lakeshore drive as folks enjoyed a beverage of their choice at the local establishments.

It's not over yet, there still in the works

If the bike park ect up owls goes ahead, then that will help push the cops to let it happen

Yes, that was a great time. A friend had a place at Jarvis Bay and we used to ride sleds to go pick up pizza. Its too bad they changed the bylaws.
