Why is it that we have the product and so many smart oil boys out there but know one wants to invest in refining? Seem like the right thing to do....NO?

You can thank all the do gooder environmentalist for that. It's not that Alberta didn't want to build new refineries, they just could not. It would be a great day if the government would stand up to these small interest groups and it would be a better day if they would all choke on their supper.

As I have heard there are 3 basic factors with building new refineries, 1st has been touched on is the greenies, the amount of time and cash that would have to be spent on approvals, the 2nd is the return on cost, the time frame to build one has been mentioned at 10 plus years. An investment of multi billions of dollars would have to be put out with no return for more than a decade. The 3rd factor is with that time frame who knows where energy technology will be at that point? 10 years ago we all felt there was going to be a world wide shortage of oil, now we have an over supply, the fluctuating cost of oil combined with other tech creeping in such as electricity and natural gas make the investment far from a slam dunk.

A forth factor that I think is a real kicker is the availability of skilled labor. Labor and contractors have priced themselves so high because of demand that investing into that kind of project would almost be impossible. If you started 5 years ago where would you get the people from? Overseas workers or drive up the cost of labor even more?

Hind sight is 20-20. The investment may have paid off if some plants were started in the early 2000's, but now, do you take the risk? Those who have the power and money to do such a thing know allot more about the behind the scenes stuff going on than any of us do.

The edmonton area refineries provide most of the finished product to western Canada. It's a pretty well balanced region in terms of we use what we produce. So it isn't very attractive to anyone looking to build a refinery because every extra bbl they produce will drive the price down.

One would have to wonder, with all our weather pattern changes, caused by carbon fuel pollution, and the fact that they are having luck with the hydrogen Engine in Europe, things may be coming to a change as far as the oil market goes,...... did say , One would have to wonder ?.....

FFS there is no evidence the weather is changing because of "carbon fuel pollution". David Suzuki and Al Gore have been trying to convince us that is the case but most consensus it is false. Just a bunch of fear mongering to fill their pockets with cash. Worked pretty good for them too.

I wish they would build some new refineries..the existing ones, including the one i work at in Regina are worn out and in some areas downright dangerous. We had a massive explosion a few xmases ago, miracle noone was killed.

Is that why your looking to change jobs? My first job out of high school was as a Crane Swamper at the Esso refinery in Edmonton. In 6 months, I had, or saw at least five close calls for life threatening injuries. That was a long time ago and I'm sure things have changed for the better.

@Ferniehawk: one of many reasons, but mostly just not wanting to live in a place i dont like. Theres nothing for me here, and I am trying to relocate before I get too old to care.

Gas here was creeping towards a buck/litre, have to check on way home see if it dropped at all

There must be SOMEONE in the higher ups that can put a stop to this!!! I mean, even the Prime Minister has to buy gas. Why does everyone just "let this bull chit happen"? We all know we're getting absolutely raped, but the politicians and government "police" just let these oil companies make money hand over fist. What in the FAWK is with the diesel prices? A by-product of making gasoline is 20 cents higher than the gasoline? It's all rape. Plain and simple!!!

pretty clear where the priorities lie when prentice can 'hint' at health care premiums coming back but could do us all a favor and limit margins at the pump.... That sounds pretty ndpish but seriously if I was saving 20 cents a litre for me that's $2000 a year would be happy to give a thou back for health care.

Taxes.

Fuel has high tax rates on it that are percentage based so higher costs translate into more tax revenue. Furthermore the more profit big oil makes the more they pay in taxes as well. It is in the government's best interest for prices to be high.
