Taxes.
Fuel has high tax rates on it that are percentage based so higher costs translate into more tax revenue. Furthermore the more profit big oil makes the more they pay in taxes as well. It is in the government's best interest for prices to be high.
Except for the fact that the largest of the corporations operating in Alberta are paying the lowest taxes ever using very creative tax aversion techniques and every possible loophole (some good reading on this), yet are exporting record levels of profits. Even the taxes that are past due are not being paid because the government has no resources to chase after them! Millions and millions written off as losses each year. Another act of corporate welfare.
And to call the new health tax a premium is false....it is a TAX directed at the heart of the little guy, and we are ALL the little guys. Big wigs will have their portion paid for as part of their compensation plan, while the record number of Albertan's living at the poverty line and the middle class, are expected to pay another tax. Yet another act of corporate welfare as not a single employer is bound to pay an employees health "premium".
How stupid are we.....
Unbelievable.
