New CRTC Mobile Internet rules

So I have a rocket hub through rogers, it went down for the first time today. I could access rogers.com but nothing else, my bill is paid in full monthly as well.
So after wasting 35 minutes first tinkering with it then another 30 minutes on the phone to rogers its up and working again and this is all due to a new rule by the CRTC that internet providers must follow.
As soon as I exceed 20 Gig of data usage, no matter what my plan, my internet will be frozen, I have to log on to a site where I have to click on a box that I understand that I have exceeded 20G of data and I may be charged for more. Then I click on the box, it asks me again, then click on it again, then I have internet again. I have to do this each time I use over 20G every month. I typically use 40-50G per month. This applies to all internet providers and not just rogers. Its with the hubs I believe, the poor guy on the phone said since this rule is out that's all the technical service has been doing is walking people through this task. Stupid government sticking there nose into everything.

What you doing that you use over 20g a month.. Watch a few movies, hotspot a motel..lol

We used a 100 gig when it was -36
for 7 days, but that's not the point.Goverment expects us to reduce all usage of everything while they lavishly flail money around on anything but the taxpayers.

Sounds like the cable tv companies are running the crtc, trying to keep their market share.

you can also burn thru a lot of GB if you watch a lot of HD programs.

Doesn't take much to hit 20gigs, my family of 4 uses at least a 100gigs a month. Net flix, You tube, music download, business accounting.....

Sounds like the cable tv companies are running the crtc, trying to keep their market share.

Our family uses 200000 mb's a month which I believe in 200 gig's? I've never had it shut off at 20 gig's. I have a Telus Smart Hub.
we're on the Telus smart hub 250 gig (256,000mb) plan, never had ours shut off either, we're already at 50 gigs for this billing cycle. I get email notifications at 50%, 90%, and 100% of allowed data used. I have to either text or email to get the block removed after hitting 100%, and it's only happened once.

The guy explained that is was new as of January 2018 so let’s wait and see. i’m looking for the rule on line.

IF it is actually a CRTC ruling it should be readily available on the CRTC website...... Personally, I think its Roger's just trying to make up a story as to why you were shut down.

I have to type in www.rogers.com/m/dc in my browser
It says i have exceeded my amount of data and have to click on a Yes, id like to resume data service and agree to pay the additional usage charges. this is new and mandated by the CRTC. so now i’ll contact them and see what is going on

my current data cycle started January 12th. maybe Telus is behind in implementing this new rule

I searched for this "rule" yesterday pretty hard and never came up with anything.

Sounds like a misunderstanding or they may have just fed Ron a bit of BS. The Code applies to all contracts for retail mobile wireless voice and data services providers and the businesses or individuals that pay for their services. Among other things, the Code helps ensure that consumers like you are aware of your rights and obligations when you sign a wireless services contract, so that you can avoid bill shock.
According to the simplified Wireless Code:

  • Regarding overage charges, the Code specifies that, when a customer’s data overage charges reach $50 in a single monthly billing cycle, the provider must suspend data overage charges once they reach $50, unless the account holder consents to paying additional charges.
  • Regarding roaming charges, the Code specifies that, when a customer’s data roaming charges reach $100 in a single monthly billing cycle, the provider must suspend data roaming charges once they reach $100, unless the account holder consents to paying additional charges.
