Anyone have any luck having sledding covered?

Got a new policy sitting on my desk that doesn't, wondering if there is anything out there that will?

I'm through SunLife, my current policy just doesn't cover death related to avalanches. Otherwise on my sled I'm covered. I could purchase an accidental death policy and opt in for an avalanche coverage however. Which reminds me, I should get that setup before the season starts.

I’m with sunlife. Been with them for almost 20 years. Policy covers all sledding activities, including mountain riding. If I was to change to more coverage for less money I would lose that aspect of sledding.

Universal / whole life policies with Canada life include coverage for all “extreme” sport activities, including snowmobiling of any type (heli skiing, parachuting, etc...).

Also with sunlife. I’m Covered for all power sports deaths. Unless I’m taking part in a racing circuit Then it’s void.

I had that same policy. When I sold my sled I told them to take it off. They wouldn’t. Instead they wanted me to take a medical. I cancelled the whole policy

I am as well. I remember being asked questions like “do I participate in highmarking” I asked the auditor if they knew what that ment. They gave me their definition, I laughed and said stop watching you tube vids, it not a competition.

I assume a person would have to be very smart in answering questions and not have ANY evidence of a causalities actions, in the mtns.
Cause I see a huge grey area there. Im I covered quading, sledding, yes I am. Mtn sledding? That may be very questionable, especially since the insurance company considers highmarking climbing hills to beat your buddies last mark, we would never get anywhere on deep days than.

My aunt is fighting with this right now. My uncle was killed in an avalanche and they don’t want to pay her out. It was an avalanche so they assume he was high marking. He was out setting traps in a trap line and doing a memorial ride. If it was an accident they would have paid out no question. It’s been awhile so not sure if it’s sorted out yet

Sorry to hear about your uncle.

That’s horrible to hear that an assumption will lead to a delay or non payment of a benefit.

According to the insurance company, or a least mine anyway. We all highmark regardless if we are in the mtns or not, and regardless of what we as responsible sledders perceive it to be.

FYI for those who have their own company, your business can hold a policy on you and the payments are tax deductible. Only the business is the beneficiary but if your spouse takes control if you die it may be no problem.

Or you write into your U.S.A. That the company as the beneficiary pays out your spouse/children for your shares in the event of your death. In my case it goes to the hold co, and my wife assumes control o the hold co, but a shotgun buy sell forces her to sell the shares in a+b co. out at market value so she doesn’t have to try to run a business she doesn’t understand. She gets paid, and business never loses a dime, plus as stated, it’s a tax deductible cost that can also be leveraged as credit after a certain period of time.

This is what manulife came back to me with.

Leaves alot grey area as to weather one would be covered or not.

Is avalanche.ca the Gospel?
What level of hazard won't pay out?

Remote area......

Basically looks like a guy would pay for something he could never collect on.

Our avalanche exclusion is designed to ensure your clients are covered for life, critical illness and disability risks if they manage the risk by obeying avalanche warnings.
Here’s our exclusion wording. It excludes claims only if the death or injury was contributed to, or caused by, an avalanche while participating in snow sports, including, but not limited to, snowmobiling, downhill or cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, etc. in an area where a high or extreme danger level avalanche warning has been posted.
We will continue to apply backcountry or snow exclusions in certain cases including high-marking or snowmobile racing or heli-skiing, or for applicants with significant health issues who won’t have immediate access to health care in a remote location.

Im with Sunlife and inquired about sledding and motocross after reading this thread. For sledding their policy states that as long as you aren't riding in areas that are out of bounds then you are covered.

Is there not Risk Management Insurance for high risk sporting activities. Like what pro sports players all have should they ever get disabled or die.
