I had started a similar thread on this subject a while ago "InReach Explorer or Sat Phone" and there were some good comments. Since then a friend and I both got an Explorer and have been playing with them but haven't had a chance to get them into the mountains yet. So far I have been pretty impressed. You have to buy a monthly package, but can suspend it at any time.

i have one and its peace of mind for my wife and myself. I used to track points and send messages, but now i just keep it on hand to send a sos if needed. I tell all my riding buddies about it just in case i am not able to hit the button.

I recommend one for everyone.

I got an InReach communicator this year. I did find it handy a few times but found the communication to be kind of finicky. Quite often while I'd try to send, I'd have to move a few feet over to get it to work. Sometimes I can get it to send immediately and sometimes it takes a good 10 minutes or so to find a sweet spot where it will send. Have other people noticed this?

I'd be pretty choked if I was pinned under my machine and couldn't get the thing to send from where I was laying.

Yes, that is a problem. You have to know where they can reach a satellite. It is like using a beacon, they are only really good if you practise and remember the sweet spots.

The one problem spot I have found is a staging area of all places. In this particular spot it is very difficult for the signal to reach a satellite due to trees and mountains. I will send a preset message when I get back to the truck stating that my trip has ended and I am back at my truck now. Sometimes I will set the inReach up higher on the roof or the top of the sled seat for better reception. On this particular day, I forget it and drove away. It fell off and I found it the next day still trying to send the signal.

I would think that if the sled were in between the inReach and the satellite, you may not get the signal through. Would be a good thing to try.

I have considered an In-reach as well. I see a few of you guys are Revy riders. I have a Garmin Rino 530 5w. Has anyone ever tried to contact search and rescue on channel 4 in Revelstoke? Would a radio test be an ok think to do while your there?

I believe the sign says that dispatched search and rescue monitor channel 4 meaning that you can use it for your everyday uses. It's not restricted just if you've called them out to find you that's the channel they will use when searching.

I have an explorer as well and have used it lots in very remote areas while out hunting in the mountains. There is the odd time that it may take up to 10 minutes to send out a message but 95 percent of the time it is gone within seconds.

Even at ten minutes you have the peace of mind knowing that help is on the way .

We tried yesterday from all our hand held radios, nothing


Had to go inside and use the cabins radio to call in we found Travis

best prices of the year are always around this time of the year, been waiting for it. Gonna upgrade from my spot to an Inreach. I like the ability of 2 way texts, even when out camping in the summer.
