another question for those who have them, how well does the mapping function work when paired with your phone? Is it similar to using a handheld GPS? or would a garmin or something of that sort still be needed if a guy wanted to keep track of where he was in poor weather conditions?

Go back to the website and you can change the presets and the recipients. Once at the home page, you should see a list with check marks that will guide you through the rest of the setup. I haven't synced to my phone yet so can't help you there.

i was under the impression that when i syncd with my ph that all my ph contacts would be on my inreach?? or do i have to manually add contacts on my computer and then sync it to have them show up on the handheld? thanks again

I only put 10 contacts in the inreach. Just emergency ones.
Have not done a full sync.

My foam case did not last long in the rzr. Wish they had something better

Hey i had the same question. I was thinking of buying an inreach explorer to have both the SOS communication and GPS functionality. I thought the explorer would be a better option than the SE model because it has the small screen for GPS. What happens if you only have the SE model and you're lost, and (for some reason) your smartphone won't turn on or won't pair in bluetooth mode? The last thing you need is if your getting extremely anxious about being lost and you can't get the inreach and phone to pair? But i've read a couple reviews of the Explorer model and they have mentioned that the screen is useless for real GPS functionality. Might as well save the extra cash and just get the SE model and pair with your phone and use its' screen.

I really like the service plan feature where you can suspend your service in offseason for $5 and no reactivation cost.

Which one: Delorme inReach SE or Explorer? Differences + Recommendation

EDIT: from what i've read further on, the Explorer is the only version that has real time GPS use. "follow a breadcrumb trail back to where you started with the explorer." I don't think this is offered with the SE.
