first of all, i live on a farm 30 minutes outside of the city, with only a very very small town(15 people) and a few neighbors(closest a mile away)

So today, i had a random vehicle, driving around slowly around my area, and they came into my yard, and came for a snoop... Well i was having none of that, and they quickly left, i chased after them in my truck, stopped them on the highway and confronted them. They were young punks saying "we were looking for some kijiji ad"... i gave them a little piece of my mind and then they went on their way.

My question to you, is how i should go along in stopping this from happening. I do not have ability to put a gate up, as out driveway is not flat to the surrounding ground it is built up, and we need to clean snow. But needs to be simple enough so that my dad doesn't wreck his truck on it, i was just going to put a spike strip up on the road and disguise it so when someone uninvited comes in they get a good surprise. But that would effect anyone coming into my yard.

So since they scouted out my yard looking for things to steal or to get into, i'm going to be waiting, got my gun waiting for next time, along with having the RCMP phone number on speed dial.

Warning shots come to mind.
My only concern is that with that, they will fib and tell the police i was shooting at them, and i will get into trouble, even if they trespass and hurt themselves on my land while trespassing. I wish we were more like the states with those kind of rules, come on my land, and i could do what ever i want.

quit feeding the dog, he'll get the idea with a few days. get an answering machine for your phone, have a radio playing in the house, have neighbors watch for strange vehicles. locked gates. gate alarm. etc,

I have lived by the theory that thieves are lazy by nature. Therefor if you make it hard for them, they will move onto an easier target.

Oh yeah, and I have a 175lbs Great Dane with a nasty bark and a real unwelcoming streak.

Nudity is the clear winner here. The more you hang out naked on the porch, the less visitors (invited or not) will be showing up.

Guns and dogs sound like the best deterrent but consequences are a little steep.
Go to the nearest outdoor sports store and get a motion activated trail cam, won't stop them from coming onto property but you will at least have a record of who was there. Aim it so it records licence plates.
