This thread has me thinking twice about buying a used GM as a third vehicle.

Well I had good luck with the 06, bad luck with the '10. My research would suggest stay away from AFM models made in '10-'11. Oh, and don't go buy the real sweet looking '10 at Kipp Scott in RD....

Nice ride Dave. Did you spring for the cummins diesel or stick with the gas engine?

Like you, I have just never had any luck with GM's. I like them but can't seem to find one that was reasonably trouble free. On the other hand, I have now had four Nissan Altimas and they have been very good with zero repairs to about 160K when I need to do brakes. The 2007 was still running strong at 315K when it was written off (my son turned left in front of a car running a yellow - Oh well). The 2013 has had a few minor recalls but has still cost me zero (beyond tires) at 123K. Hopefully your truck will be as reliable.

Currently in the hunt for a new SUV to replace my wife's Mazda CX9 that was t-boned by a red light runner April 2nd with 315K on the odometer. Nothing but brakes at 170K. So far Kia Sedona is the leader.

It's the gasser. The old ones were famous (like the Toyotas) for being hard in gas. This motor (new for '17) is supposed to get better mileage and has way more power. We will see...
They never made a '16 1/2 ton...the '17 is all new, based on the XD, but shorter.
Honestly , I test drove it and was sold. Felt like a 3/4 ton (like a bit firm), handled like a 1/4 ton, accelerated like a Camaro...

Be very glad you stayed away from the diesel...my dad works at a nissan dealer and says they are nothing but problems. The few they have sold are back at the shop regularly. Apparently the engine they used for that truck was originally from a gen set and is built to run at steady rpm for its whole life span...not exactly built for a truck. I guess you can't even idle those engines due to the emissions crap on them so good luck in our climate!
Otherwise they are beautiful trucks hope you enjoy it!

Sedona is a minivan. The new CX9 won a bunch of awards when it came out a year or two ago.

Haha. Right you are on both accounts. We were a bit disappointed with the new CX9. Front end restyling is a little much but most important, the new turbo 4 cylinder doesn't have the same kick as the V6 did and it is buzzy under acceleration. Yes - I meant to say the KIA Sorento - the 7 passenger one. Very nice ride and my wife preferred the interior layout. Extremely quiet. She still needs to check out some others in so I guess we will see what she decides on. Completely her choice.

What I like about the Sorento is that the 7 passenger size vehicle is available as a 5 passenger in the same size. This gives you more luggage / storage / interior room than basically all of the competition. The competition is either a smaller 5 seat or only available in 7 seat. In my mind the third row of seats is completely useless and actually worse than useless because it wastes so much interior volume. I say this because sitting in the rear seats is a form of torture.

We will keep an eye out for that version. Have to get her in to see the Murano though. I am sure that mentioning all of this came up on S&M will be sure to get her seeing things our way (ha).

Rented a Kia Sorrento Down south for a while ... whoa ...what a pos ! Rattled , rough shifting , noise from wind in the dash , soso on fuel ..
Very disappointing , not in the same league as the wife's equinox / or jap. SUVs ... imo .

My sister in law had a Sorrento a number of years ago and the engine decided to expire on the highway around Hinton. Long story short, Kia might as well shove their warranty up their a$$ because it took getting a lawyer involved to actually come good for it. Not to mention they were without it for nearly 4 months.

Well looks like everyone's buck is safe. Went out today and drove the contenders. One of the key points for my lovely bride is she does not want a sunroof and absolutely won't have anything to do with a Panoramic roof (mostly glass). She works in a law firm and they represent auto manufacturers so she knows safety stuff inside out based on actual results of major collisions. Not saying these things are unsafe but she appreciates, in all of it's mind numbing detail, exactly how glass reacts vs metal. Keep in mind that she was just t-boned (other person ran the red at about 80 K) and they came out of it quite good. No changing her mind on that. So the results (meaning my interpretation of her impressions) are:

1. Hyundai Santa Fe XL - Nice enough vehicle. Can't get into the nicer trims without ever increasing roof glass. Rides and handles good. Power is good. She wasn't keen on the seat shape as she has very long legs and she felt that the seat lip was cutting into her thigh. I didn't notice as I have almost no legs.

2. Honda Pilot - Nice vehicle with a monstrous feeling and nicely appointed interior. Adequate handling and power - I would call it compliant. Extremely quiet. She did not like the sight lines and she seemed to feel it was too big (translation, she didn't care for it).

3. Kia Sorrento XL - Nice vehicle especially in the higher trim lines (which include the glass roof) and in the lower -sun roof free- trim was still very nice and reasonably featured. Seats and sight lines were acceptable and power and ride was quite good - it seems=ed to me to have a bit of an edge over the Santa Fe IMO but this is somewhat subjective as my a** was firmly planted in the passenger seat.

4. Nissan Murano - AWD comes with a sunroof. No way to get around that and AWD is a must. Wouldn't even take it for a test drive. Period...buuuuuttt...wait a minute...what's that other SUV over there?

5. Nissan Pathfinder - This car was as substantial as the pilot, as nicely appointed and can be bought very well equipped sans sunroof. Handled a touch better than the Kia and seemed more satisfying in hard cornering than the Pilot (but they were close). Not quite as much driver feedback as the Mazda CX9 but I am OK with that. I personally don't need to feel it when I run over a dime but some of that was dealt with in the 2017 model which has unfortunately switched to a buzzy turbo 4. A few other interior styling updates eliminated that car much to our disappointment. The biggest selling feature was the camera system with that 360 degree view which she loved. Front and rear seat heaters yada yada. So I think the Nissan Pathfinder SL V6 in Caspian Blue could be a winner. Clearly her favourite so far. I have had four Nissans so am more comfortable than I am with the Kia's - I have only had one experience with them through my parent's car and it was not particularly satisfying.

Will let you know what she finally chooses but tomorrow my daughter in law goes in to deliver twins (first grandchildren) so I imagine that will take center stage tomorrow.

Seems. South Korea for some reason is not as in tune with Warranty quality as other countries of manufactured goods ...
Same thing with Samsung and there warranty. Good products , but they detest standing behind them ..
Do their best to get out of any claim .
Could be coincidence, but I have heard of the same things with SK equipment and vehicles ...

I hit the love button at this point in your post! I hate sunroofs with a passion.
