Best antenna for your truck is any of the nagoya UT's, best just for range is the J-NUODA, pretty long though but it is telescopic. Next is quality

I would not go up those narrow roads that have very few pullouts with a handheld anyway.

Even with an external antenna? I rarely ride during the week usually weekends but still need to listen for lowbeds and service trucks.

External antennas help a lot for sure, consistant 6k ranges. But there is the odd time 1k. Just like your truck radios can get down to lower ranges maybe 4k. Here is another mic i ordered.

Hey if you like the UV-5R try out the UV-5RTP it's the 8W version of the UV-5R.
You can get five of them with mics for $200 USD.
That UV-G3TP is water resistant, which is nice but a little more money.
Also try this anttenna for the extra $5 USD.
