Re: Everything BaoFeng & VHF Radios

I question if those 8watt Baofengs are really 8watt? Don't seem to be much different than the 5 watt ones.

Haven't spent a ton of time testing them though.

What is the range difference between the 8watt and the 5 watt baofengs?
They are very close to 8watt.
What kind of anttenna are you using?

It's thought to realize any gains without a better anttenna.

How they send and how clear they send is the real issue. Some are clearer than others. Gt=5tp is one of the clear ones. The tyt transmits at higher power for sure.. no question about it.

Oh i have a bunch of those radio's.

I have never tested the range difference of the 8watts vs 5watt, they seem about the same for range, but that is just my observation.

But am wondering if you or anyone has some in the field results that are a little more scientific than my logging road conversations?

Given the same antenna's how much better is the 8watt for range?

I think it's an exponential relationship wattage vs distance, I'll look for somesort of geeky explanation.

But real-world.
8W with the high gain antenna I can hit the same type radio in the house from the lake on sale mountain. Frisby to the house. Boulder cabin to house. And turbo to parking lot. Seen over 18km on the wap consistently.

That's pretty good. I talked to friends on hall from keystone on a BCA!

Had line of sight obviously, but if you are on one side of the mountain and I'm on the other I get nothing.

Also what frequency are you using?

If you are using UHF channels your are only gonna get a fraction of the range you get with a VHF frequency.

Haha Yeah thats about as good as it gets for a BCA (UHF). Amazing it tunneled down the valley that far.

I got frustrated with the BCA when I could see people in the trees and not be able to talk to them, it's what lead me to all this nonsense.

Well I use the RR channels, depends what road Im on. I use 3.0 on the mountain.

I try not to ride 20miles away from my friends, haha so range is more of an issue on the FSR roads.

Haha agreed.
But never hurts to be able to.

Maybe try a better anttenna.

And if you can, try to convince your friends to use a VHF channel when on the mountain. Makes a big difference when tree riding.

Yeah I have the whip antenna. Might try a roof antenna. I haven't had any problems with logging trucks, but I call every KM.
A real CB would just be extra piece of mind on windy roads.

Sooo many around here in Pick ups and SUV's dont even call or have a radio. I have ran into problems that way.....

I will be using Vhf, trouble is is the tyt I can only use the antennas that come with it. Not as if I can use a quality FP-405 or roof antenna

Just keep getting that error message. "The disc image file is corrupted" I'll try again tomorrow when somebody with some computer savvy can show me what I'm doing wrong.
Did you get them downloaded to your desktop off of Google drive?

Re: Everything BaoFeng & VHF Radios

Yea im using a couple UV-82r with those nagoya-771 antennas. The range is impressive. 20+km with line of site and 10+km thru the trees. For example, I can talk to guys in the parking lot from the clemina cabin and talk to the cabin from morning glory. But il agree the hand held mic options arent great. Im using chirp and over the years put together a list of 250+ channels for all the areas i go across BC and AB and have the same channel list on my Kenwood vhf in the truck.

chirp is easy to use, the the cable drivers that are the tricky part. But youtube tutorials are your friend, theres tons of em for every radio and cable options
