Hey I'm a pretty short guy around 5'6" and weigh in at around 160lbs I'm just want some input cuz I've ridden race quads most my life and have decided to make the change to two tires. Would the new yammy 250 or 450 be my best bet I'm looking for the power but maybe not the weight? Also wondering if there's any way to set sag and or anything else that would make it so I can touch with both feet or at least stand a chance with these big bikes?

If its your first bike I would start with a 250f. Lots of power and fairly light to handle....you can get a low cut seat or drop the suspension down a bit. At 5'6" you should be close tho.

Hey im not a big guy either about 170lbs and same thing iv had a few 450s now and the yamaha is by far the best handling although it doesnt make power like my kawi did but it doesnt feel like a tank. It seems really heavy pushing it around but as soon as your rolling its like ridng a 250 but with gobs more juice. also the yamaha seat is much lower than the other brands. friend is 5'5" and he has no problem riding mine. My 2010 YZ450 is for sale too if your ever interested.

2010 Yamaha YZ450F Mint Condition less than 10 hours. $6200 Obo - Edmonton Dirt Bikes, Motocross For Sale - Kijiji Edmonton Canada.

It's not my first I had a cr85r back in the day good bike till she blew up. I hopped on a new 2011 250 and 450 at the dealership and I could barely get my leg over the damn thing so I dunno maybe because it hadn't been ridden and broke in if I dropped my susp cause Of my weight you think my back tire would rub exhaust? A friend also told me to shave seat. Old probably lose a inch or so right there? Thanks guys any help is appreciated

When I dropped the suspension on my ktm the back tire would always rub up against the exhaust

First off, you should never set the sag for your height, that's very dangerous. Sag is to properly adjust the bike to your weight, you a need different linkage and spacers in the forks to drop ride height. Since your 5'6" you shouldn't have to adjust the height, they don't make the bikes so you can sit comfortably flat footed on the ground. You only need one foot on the ground.

Secondly, if you have bike experience you'll be fine with any displacement. I've been riding dirtbikes for 10 years, raced 5 years of those and I've found that my favorite bike to ride is a 250f. There has never been a jump I couldn't because of my bike, in fact it makes you a better rider by picking more fluid lines to keep speed up unlike a 450 where you'll get the habit of pointing and shooting. But lots of people want the most powerful thing out there nowadays.

Now lastly, if your looking at buying brand new I'd look at buying the new YZ250F. One of my friends is a pro and I took his 2011 out and wow was I ever impressed by it. Yamaha finally stepped up to the plate with a 250F, now all they need is EFI on it.

That has nothing to do with dropping your suspension, that's the width of your tire causing that. Dropping it will rub your fender more often.

I ride a kx250, and im 5'8" I put a 2" lowering link in, dropped the forks and shaved the seat, and find it comfertable. It's a big bike, but tons of fun.

Thanks for the info I'm definitely gonna be getting the new Yamaha my YFZ 450 has been very good to me,just wish the 250 was as you said feul injection. I just took my buddy's 07yamaha 450 for a bag and I seem to fit that bike much better than the 2011 probably because everything is so stiff on a brand new bike. You must have dropped forks on the triple clamp?

just get a 450 and you'll be set for good, never need the upgrade for pwr from the lil 250f so you'll save cash in the end that way from not needing to buy more pwr l8r on. Take a look at the SX pros, ie: RC, JS etc, their all shorter smaller guys. ;) .................RIDE IT LIKE YA STOLE IT!!!!

I would ride a 2011 YZ450 first if you can. Thats the only bike (imo) to be a "love it or hate it" chassis.

Ive been riding all my life and i run a tweaked 125. One buddy runs a 2010 yz250f and its a hoot i quite enjoy throwing a leg over it, its fast, torquey, and fun. Now another buddy has a 2010 450yzf (he used to race in western canada circuit) and let me tell you that thing SCARES THE ch!t OUT OF ME!!!! That bike is to the point where i dont even have fun on it its just to much unless your going purely for competition.

dont let this post scare you. The 250 will BORE you once you learn to rip on it. I throw my leg over buddies 250f once in awhile and it makes me wanna puke everytime I hit the tabletop completely tapped looking for more power. The 450's are awesome. I ride a KTM 450 sx now and the bike before it was a CRF 450r you cant beat the thumper big bore. Go for it.

I've ridden a 250f for 5 years and I find the exact opposite. 450's bore me. A little blurp of the throttle and you have more than enough speed for a jump. Boring. Lol

I'm pretty much into riding it all I frequent the track with a friend that races CMRC but mostly camping trips to Brule and vega. I also have some home built jumps on the back of my property. Jumps climbs and trails. I'm going to look tomorrow around Edmonton talk to the dealers see what they say about making it fit me a little better.

You can buy a shaved seat and also put 1-2 inch bar risers on so you can lower the front forks in the tree.

depending on what you plan to do for riding. if your a bush basher, take a look at the ktm 300 2 smoker. cheaper to operate then a 4 stroke and cheaper to maintain. and any idiot can work on them. and ive had both 4 and 2 strokes.

agreed....have couple friends that have had to rebuild their 250f with way less hours than what I had on my 450x. I think pounding the rev limiter all the time kills 'em.
