If I can make it out there to help is there anything I should bring with me ? Tools ?

Excellent question.
If you have a long pry bar maybe that's it. Lunch, pop water that type of thing. We have all the power saws we need. Sled or quad depending on my snow report tommorow.
Club mbets camping out there in the groomer area and they supplied the burgers for supper. Come on out give us some of your time and strong back and then stick around for supper and some social time with some fellow Cataract Riders. Maybe meet some new friends.
Thanks

Depending how my work week goes I might be able to chip in with some leg work Friday and Saturday, I like what you guys are doing and it seems like a shame not to help out. I may be able to bring two 5 foot long pry bars along with me, and some battery operated sawzalls if needed. What time do you guys typically meet at the staging area?

Also I wanted to ask about the monthly meeting - maybe I'm confused. On the website it says that everyone meets on the third Tuesday of every month but somewhere on page 2 of this thread it says the first Tuesday. I'm assuming the website is incorrect.
I will stop by whichever it is:d

The website is out of date. Our meetings this year are the first Tuesday of the month, 7 PM, at The Royal Canadian Legion #275. The address is: 755 40 St SE, Calgary, AB T2A 5G3

Thanks. We think the same. We love what's happening out there and the future is looking good also. Many of us are camping out there in the groomer area that's on the East side of the road just before you turn into the Cataract Creek staging area. We will be there and leaving around 930 10.00 time.
Be good if we can get a count so I know how much food to buy.

Thanks Scott for getting the website issues straightened out.

Was out there today working on grooming sleds. About 5-6 inches of fluffy snow. Talked with the C O`s out there today. I had to school them on the area being closed till December 1st. They are aware and are checking on hunters and will keep eye on the area. Snow has a good start and we need more before December. Work weekend coming up on the 11,12.

Thanks for the update Glen. So will you be using snowmobiles or quads for trail clean-up? I take it that your measurement of 5-6" was taken at the parking lot correct? It would sure be nice to be able to use our snowmobiles to start packing down the snow on the trail. I would think that you don't want quads out there chewing up the snow base. Also, if your staging out of Catarac, can you get snowmobiles across the rocky river bed to access the rails without destroying them?

Wilkerson Creek across from staging area is frozen already and we will be putting in the bridge across Cataract Creek Friday. Sleds and packing will be done as they remove the fallen trees. As long as weather holds it all should be good. Snow further back will be better and mostly sled only back there. We have work on the Valley Bottom Trail to get it open best as we can for the season. Will have sled guides out there packing also. Hope you can make it out.

Relating a satellite phone message from last night from Glen: All is good at Cataract, 1 Degree above upon arrival in the dark with clear sky’s, all the snow is still there from last weekend, supposed to snow last night - a sprinkling. All good to go!

As well, if you are bringing a snowmobile, do not unload it in the parking lot at Cataract Creek. We will leave the parking lot at 10 AM all together and drive down the Lost Creek Road together to the SLS bridge across Cataract Creek. We have arranged to unload there to be closer to the deep snow, and to save our plastic skis.

Thanks for all the help this past weekend. We had helpers on Friday Saturday and Sunday. Weather was good and we got alot done. Valley Bottom Trail is again open from Cataract Creek to Etherington in a limited access. We will increase signage so you can follow this season. Still work to do more going on this month.

Just a reminder this area is still closed for general snowmobiling because of Hunting Season. With this area being a PLUZ there are special conditions and on is no Snowmobiling till December 1st of every year. Soon as hunting season is over so are the time limits. Gates will be open and ready to go.

Thanks to all the volunteers that came and helped

It was our pleasure. Taylor said she was smiling from ear to ear the whole time. I think both of us were a little woken up to how much work is involved to keep the trails hazard free. I will keep in touch in regards to the New Years trek and the Poker Run.

Not that I'm aware of - I was only out there on the Friday to clear out one loop. It's the closest area to home so it'll be great to go for day rides and let out some braps! Haha, I think I spooked all the wildlife with my GGB can - I'm sure the hunters in the area were happy about that...:realmad:

You spooked me with that thing a few times. Kept me from falling asleep on the quad.
Keep a eye here we may do another weekend

A couple of Trail Committee members were out at Cataract yesterday clearing trial again. They started from the south end of Oyster Excursion Trail - the very south and west point of the trail system (and best snow) - and headed north. There were many trees blown down and after 5 1/2 hours of chainsawing and throwing of logs, had almost reached the SLS access road approximately 75% north on the trail. They said it was a mess there!

A couple of us are headed out there today to tweak the new groomer. After that, we hope to be able to get out and do some trail clearing, finishing off Oyster from the north end to meet where the guys got to yesterday.

The graph below shows the snow coming in just south of the designated trail system, at the south end of the area itself, and north where you turn off on Hwy 541 - Highwood House. Since the 12th, the snow has been coming, to the south for sure.
