I thought about that, but the existing cluch side piston is unscathed... not a knick on it, so I figured at $210 per piston I'd save myself the 210 and reuse mine..... realistically if I get picky I can turn my $200 rebuild into a $1500 rebuild (head, 2 pistons, ect) I have a new set of rings for the existing piston so I was just gonna change the rings..... Is that thinking fugged???????

I can see the way you are thinking, it is a 50/50 either way. As long as you can rip it up on your trip, right now that is all that counts:beer:

Looks good guys, I really enjoyed rebuilding mine with Magnet when I squeaked a piston. The first pull after it was back together was the most nerve racking. Hope to ride with you boys soon !!:beer::d

I bought the exact same machine new in '99. Right from the first pull of the rope, it was the biggest POS I ever owned. It never ran right from the get go. I took it in 4 or 5 times for tuning and such, they could never get it figured out. I whined for a new replacement, but no go. The warranty ran out with about 600km on it, and shortly after I ended up melting down the mag side piston. The head looked the same as this one. We put in a new piston, rings on both sides, cleaned up the head with a dye grinder, and it ran like a million dollars. There must have been something goofy with the piston from day one.

I didn't get any pics of the cleaned up head.... wanted too but I forgot... I used a dremel with a high grit stone wheel and then polished it with a fabric wheel...looked not too bad, still had some pocks but I figure after cooke I'll pull the head off to inspect everything.

Did you decide to go with two new pistons, the other one in the pic looks like new. No wonder you left it. I just rebuilt an 02 summit 800 HO, and after about 30 hours on it, the PTO side piston is gone again, the ring is effed, and the Rave valve has a chunk missing of it. AHHHHHH!!!! I have been working in GP so I don't have the time myself, or friends around to help out. I'll find out tomorrow what the cost will be. Thinking about 3-400$. I just hope the pot is good, otherwise I can add another 400$ to it. Don't forget to supply the wobbly pops on the first ride for all the help, did I just say that. Ooops.
