That looks like a cool/hot setup. Many times I put on a light smoke and finish on the NG gas Q.Smoked the fish the wife and I had caught two weeks ago.
Combo smoker/bbq is an awesome setup.
That's not how to do it. You want to soak the chips in water then place them in a smoker Box and put the Smoker box under your grill just on top of the burners.Another rib eye tonight. But added some wood chips for a bit of smoke.

Get a smoke tube and pack it fully of pellets
Do you actually find they work? I bought a smoke tube too, never noticed it did much to the meat for smoke flavor. Bought a portable country smoker from UFA for $300 and not going back.
I use a smoke tube all of the time when cold smoking stuff like cheese. They work great.
Try it, very little smoke is actually needed for smoke aroma and light flavor.I can see the purpose for that. My gas bbq is probably too vented to get much smoke flavour.
