You are correct, but for the record, 99% of the swaps are done with mechanical 12v's due to their shear ease of electrical. 1998 rams and older. Also because you can get big big power reliably and easily. Rarely do you see guys swapping in new stuff as it isn't worth the cost and headaches associated.

Neighbour did one. A Cummins in a 05 Ford. Looked like more hassle than it worth. Went good after that

Dodge had always run the straight 6 so a v8 wasn't there to phase out. As for emissions there isn't much more restricitons they can impose, they are allowed next to nothing for PM and NOx emissions as it is, and Ford and GM pass those standards.

The 6.7 was recalled for faulty emissions components.232,000 trucks were recalled due to faulty catalytic converters. Look it up if you don't believe me.


Do we need to dig into the 6.0 and talk emission system failures? Asking for a friend. :)

So, are there any negatives and how does it measure up with the old reliable 4BT?

There’s a fine line between price and quality. There have been some complaints that there is a quick tearing of the cylinders because of the low quality of the materials. As a result, it can increase oil consumption. The connecting rod bearings are prone to failure, which can cause damage to the crankshaft. It only carries a 90-day warranty, which is also a concern. Standard 4BT Crate Engines come standard with a 6-12 months unlimited miles warranty.

For guys who want to modify the R2.8 fuel system any sort performance upgrades will instantly void the warranty. The Bosch Fuel Pump is all electronic as is the emissions control systems which means removal of the governors, adding higher RPM fuel springs and adding some 550cc, 12 mm injector nozzles isn't going to fly with the R2.8!

With all electronic engines, more moving parts equals more points of failure as well as expensive parts/time in the shop. With a new Crate Mechanical 4BT Engine you get the same horsepower, more torque 370 LBS-FT vs. 267 LBS-FT, no emissions equipment, no electronics and 35 years of knowledge on the performance modification side. The price for a 4BT Mechanical is also about half the cost of the R2.8 which can be off-putting for many enthusiasts. However for all of the rabble rousing between cousins the R2.8 looks like a cool engine. So, to sum up, a few minuses but a lot of pluses; and only time will tell how the engine performs out there on the trail long-term.

And you literally quoted the negatives from a website that sells these 4bt crate motors so it’s in their best interest to make anything but the 4bt sound unappealing and tried to pass it off like it’s something you came up with. Lol.

Not really sure what you want to dig into, the 6.0 is a piece of garbage, and the 6.4 is in many ways a bigger pile of junk. I'm not afraid to call out the huge flaws and engineering mistakes of the brand I drive. Unlike others here that believe a 400hp 1000ftlb torque diesel engine in a pickup is somehow God's gift to mankind.

Let's put that 400hp duramax/powerjoke in a semi and gross it at even 39,500kg's and see how it pulls, it's got more hp then the semis now!

It's funny how the non ram owners know the major flaws. Front ends trannys, etc. Gotta find something when they know it has the best engine a million times over. V8 diesels are garbage, there is a reason they are non-existent in any notable engine maker. Anyone with an ounce of knowledge knows Cummins speaks for itself with engines. Super nice truck, been contemplating a 2018, but not sure. As far as power I don't see the need. My 13 has more power then I need, even towing 26,000lbs I have more power to pass at highway speeds then you need pulling that kind of weight.

Anyone know when they are suppose to hit the lot? At the least be a great time to pick up a 2018 once the 2019 are on the lot.

They have been dumping 2018’s over the past month at up to %25 off. The “free” Cummins has been advertised at a $10000 discount and incentives on top of that. One of my coworkers has been shopping around and in the last week has seen the best quotes, so if looking for something on a lot and can live with the accessories it comes with and don’t need or want the 1000ft lbs there are a number of 18’s available.

The young skinny girl might be good in a jeep or a mini ride. and it was obvious I didnt write the pros and cons, im not that creative. lower cost more mod options better warranty. I still stand by what I posted. the new engine just isnt there yet. Carry on, by what you are posting your into the cumaid lol.

Wow I did t know someone could get so butt hurt by calling their BS post out. For someone who isn’t into the Cumaid you claim to know a lot about it. Got some on your chin too I think.

dam... That's what i paid for my first house... 3 bedroom bungalow with fully finished basement and over size 30x30 garage in edmonton west end...dam sickening what trucks are priced at now!

Well it's only for a personal grocery getter, it was more about getting the newer body style/interior then anything.

Should be able to knock off more and get it OTD for under $60k

That's not too bad.... but dahm that is a lot for a truck. Sticker prices have jumped so much. My 13 sticker was $71k and is perfect for options, now like exact same truck in a 18 is about $77k sticker, which might as well jump to about $85k and get a laramie.

Thats a great deal for you but the guys that already own the same truck just took a 10k haircut on the value of their truck. Only fiat discounts their trucks like that.

And the smart buyer doesn’t pay list for anything and the ones that do don’t care about the resale discount because of holdover discounts.

Besides, are you not one of the Ram haters? So there is no reason to be concerned.

Fer fawks sake settle down you Ford guys - Dodge will release a plug and play crate motor that you can replace your powerstroke with soon enough! Then you too can enjoy a real engine that isn’t required to rev to 5000 to make that hill. :D
