^^ Dodg....errr I mean Ram, whatever...will not come out with a HH unless they ditch the coils in the rear, ram had a HH out with leaf springs but it was just a 3/4 ton with a 1500 badge (and only available in RC/LB) like they did with the older quad cab hemis. Not sure if they still offer it, OR if it was ever even offered in Canada!?

why would it not be any different than the front end on the 2500? you just put heavier coil springs and joints and a heavier duty rear end that has a higher gvwr and done.

Here is an update on the weight of the truck...pretty much all in, with two sleds on the deck. I weighed the truck at the Waste Transfer scale in Sparwood...the operator said the scale had just been re-certified a week before.

I weighed the truck with the new deck and equipment. The new stuff added was an 8' Truck Boss Deck, a carbide protection kit, a 12' ramp, a winch mounted on the deck as well as an 8' equipment tub that slides in and out of the box. With a full tank of Gas and my 190 lb body ballast the weights came out as follows:

Total truck weight = 6,404 lbs…I still have 1,796 lbs to max GVWR.
Front axle weight = 3,329 lbs…I still have up to 721 lbs available for the front.
Rear axle weight = 3,075 lbs…I still have up to 1725 lbs available for the rear.

I then loaded the truck up with two sleds...a 2008 stock M1000 153 kitty cat and a 2009 800 155 Dragon Pull-yur-ass. The only mod to the Dragon is an SLP pipe and can. Both these sleds had about ½ a tank of gas. To try and simulate a maximum fuel load I then added 22 Imperial gallons of water at 220 lbs, which is equal in weight to 30 Imp gallons of gas (137 Liters) and three heavy toolboxes to simulate Beer and Gear. Super Clamps, tie downs and a little bit of miscellaneous survival gear are also included in the weight. With a full tank of Gas and my 190 lb body ballast the weights came out as follows:

Total truck weight = 7,827 lbs…I still have 373 lbs to max GVWR.
Front axle weight = 3,263 lbs…I still have up to 787 lbs available for the front.
Rear axle weight = 4,564 lbs…I still have up to 236 lbs available for the rear.

The added weight of the sleds and gear actually pulled 66 lbs off of the front axle weight compared to the unloaded weight. I purposely placed most of the water and tool ballast at the back end of the box to try and max out on the rear axle weight. The tool ballast and the water ballast could have all been pushed further towards the front of the truck box to change the balance of front-rear weight distribution.

After I add in the missing front passenger at 200 lbs, I should still be legal.

I also used the winch to load the M1000 onto the deck, just to test it out...works great.

I may as well throw in some info about fuel economy with the 5.0 and the 6 speed electronic transmission.

On the trip to weigh the truck with the newly installed equipment, the Lie-O-Meter said 12 Liters/100 km at 110 Kph, on the return trip at 100 Kph it showed 11 Liters/100 km.

On the trip to weigh the truck with the two sleds on the deck, the Lie-O-Meter said 16 Liters/100 km at 110 Kph, on the return trip with the two sleds on the deck at 100 Kph, the Lie-O-Meter said 14 Liters/100 km. The trip from Fernie to Sparwood is pretty flat, except for one hill on the south side of Sparwood.

I have been watching this thread with great interest. I commend you sir for putting in the effort to do it right. Also keep in mind that snow in the skids will add some weight the sleds.

Air bags or Timbren's to get more wieght forward?

Good work dude! I was also wondering about 100# of snow on the sleds or under the truck on a slushy, wet, winter road.

It is interesting that Sparwood is 500' higher than Fernie, so you should have got better mileage on the ride home but then again 35 kms is not a true indication.

Impressive for a 1/2 ton.........maybe I should get a Ford???................not likely!

Hope the getting pulled over in a half ton al the time, doesn't cut into you're riding hours.

It would be totally awesome to see the look on their face when your all legal. I would bet they would be recall rating those scales immediately. Well worth the hassle lol.

How did the rig handle the load down the highway? As well mayby mentioned but are you running a p metric tire or a load range e?


The truck felt like a truck carrying two sleds, it is definitely noticeable, but it didn't really feel much different than my buddies 2500HD Diesel crew cab short box. I did pull out and pass a motor home on the way to the Sparwood weigh scale...felt pretty good and got the job done pretty quick.

The truck has E range tires...all of the technical stuff is in post # 1.

Some peeps mentioned snow and slush accumulation on the truck and skids. Definitely something to keep in mind...the truck would have slush coming and going but the skid would only be loaded up on the return trip and that would be after a lot of squashed dinosaurs have been sent out the exhaust pipe.

As for getting pulled over it won't happen ran my f150 supercrew with a deck summit 1000 and a Polaris rmk 800 both with 162 tracks for two years never once got pulled over.
Yes went to bc as well like that.
And I was wayyy over weight

Keep in mind that FernieHawks truck is a regular cab long box HD 1/2 ton.
Bigger rear ends and higher pay load.
Not your run of the mill super crew grocery getter?

Finally a great post on the half ton issue
I say if its within the weight limits then its legal and end of story. The weight issue with the full floating axle and semi floating is a non issue as manufacturers build all pickups to carry a load and do not post the true weight that the truck is built for. For road and consumer safety. They can only post legal limit at 75-90% of total capable load that the truck is built for (only makes sense right) If the truck said it could carry a 7500lb payload and then break frame and suspension parts we would see a lot of trucks at the side of the road
You may get pulled over (time will tell)
You may wear out more parts

My suggestion would be get an officer to check it and see if he has an issue with it (get the one that looks like he just found out timmys stopped selling his favorite doughnut) cause he will be the one that writes the ticket after you spend 40 minutes arguing with him at -25 on the side of the hiway
