It is plausable that the engine could've been heat seized, that is when the metal in the piston and in the cylinder both expand due to heat to the point that the clearances between them are reduced to zero. This isn't all that rare and when the metals cool and shrink back to original size the engine can turn over again, this almost always causes critical damage to the piston and cylinder walls. I had this happen on an F7, I got the thing running after about 20 minutes but it only ran for about 5 more before it was truly seized. Google it, it's pretty common really.

in the old cast iron sleeved engines you could get away with heat seize a few times and limp it home. I wouldn't recommend it but if you are stranded out in the boonies what choice have you got.
