From a company point of view and from a supervisor that has to deal with guys not doing their job I see his point. You give guys an inch they take a mile! Not saying you do but the potential is there so he will try to eliminate the possibility. It sucks I know but guys have ruined it in the past.

I see it differently, If I can't trust my staff to work when they need to be working to get things done and maintain schedule I don't want them working for me. As long as the work is getting done what you do with down/slack/break time is up to you.

That said I don't work in a shop environment with fixed hours.

Oh I get you Neil... I am proud to say our plant is immaculate and we have over 99.9% yearly scheduled run time so I would like to think we have our priorities straight!

For the most part I can and do trust my guys. But we got multiple departments and most of the other guy I wouldn’t trust. I wish we could and did have stuff like that but we can’t because of a few guys. Fun stuff does increase moral of a place.

Degradation of work ethics - not a hope in ell this would be allowed by our company.
As a manager there is no way I would allow our clients to see this going on in a refinery setting.
Do what yo want in the lunch room but anything outside lunch room is where you get paid to produce.
I may be old school but there are enough slackers on site already that can't concentrate as it is.

I just spent 31 years as a pulp mill electrician, and there's no way you'll convince me that putting green is only getting used on breaks. Setting it up in the control room is just a slap in the companies face. Stow it so I don't have to fix the chit you broke while you weren't doing your job. Seen it happen way too many times to have any sympathy for you.

I have spent my working career in many control rooms across North America and I can honestly say none of them had a putting green. I remember when someone first suggested a TV!! That took quite a bit of convincing in a lot of plants. Started with a TV only in the lunch room, then eventually the control room but only nights. Put the putting green in the lunch room or a shop out of site. Lunch time or break time no problem but when the sh** hits the fan people need to be focused and aware of what’s going on. We aren’t talking a cookie factory here.

Wow the old school grouches are coming out.. all opinions welcome times are changing folks whether we like it or not.

Never been to a place like you work so it’s hard to picture. But sounds like you got a good crew and most likely you guys wouldn’t abuse it. So I can see your point. But I bet that putting green isn’t a much of a distraction or a waste of time a smart phones!

How is this relevant to changing times ? Is the expectation of productivity for salary/wages different than it used to be ? Why are times changing like it or not , who’s changing it, and what if someone doesn’t like it ?

To the original poster, I wouldnt worry about it, move on, that person is your superior.
Just make sure its out of sight during the day. Imo there is a time and place for everything and who knows what type of mood that person was in when they saw it.

Our operators had exercise equipment but I dont recall seeing them using it ever when management was at site during the day.
