hey all my riding partners dont use beacons but have avy back packs... i have a beacon and use it but what good does it doo if no one else have them or uses them... other then the resuce team can find my dead a$$...

i trust my group with my life at anytime they are family... maybe i will buy a second one and give it too some one too put in there back packs so if something does happen at least some one else has one...

I have a BCA tracker that I wear and I have an old school analog PEIPS that I hand my friends without one and say "here, this will allow me to find you. Now, go test that slope" (picked it up for $25)
Only one friend is still borrowing this one. You can also have that conversation in front of a wife, parent or girlfriend.
I mean, lets figure a conservative $3k in equipment and stopping $200. short? Thats like 5 post ride dinner and drinks, pack a sandwich, yes I'm going to say it, buy cheap beer and it saves up pretty quick. :d

I am sure this has been covered on S&M enough, but it is also pretty thoughtless to put a friend or group of friends in a situation to try and find you without this equipment. $200 can really make a life and death difference when most avalanche victims die of suffocation.
Sorry for the rant. One of my riding buddies Uncle died 2 feet below the surface, beacon at home "just a short ride".
I am not here to tell anyone (except my Daughter) what to do. Just ask your family what they think....

They are not thinking obviously. So you guys are the safest group out in the mountains and you come up on a group that is caught in an avy, now what, can you find them. Avalanches don't discriminate they hit anyone at any time. I think you need to have a serious talk with them bringing up all points and if they are sledding and can't afford beacons well sit at home for a couple of weekends to save the money and put towards beacons. I wouldn't want to put someone else through the trauma of not being to find me because I was cheap and stubborn. Think about the others in your life not just you.

Hate to complicate your life but take a avy course and you,ll realize how little you know about avys and rescue, especially multiple burials, scared the crap out of me to realize I was driving around blind for 10 years or so, even though we had the proper gear. Then you can tell your buddies that you can probably rescue them if they had a beacon but you,ll know they,ll never find you, spooky.

Your friends are ignorent fawking idiots if they will not wear a beacon. More so to the guy that has one and wont wear it. If I were you I would have found a new group long ago. I dont care if you trust them with your life, they obviously dont care about yours. It amazes me how fawking stupid some people really are. Your best bet is to find a new group, unless you can knock some sense into these so called "friends" you ride with now. One day it will bite them in the ass & they will wish they had the proper gear.

SL..aka boots.....I dont have a lot to add here......but I choose not to ride with similar people a couple of years ago. I was investing in Avy Training and Avy gear......they thought no need.......If I ride in a group I always check to make sure everyone has the correct gear and before we head up to the hills we all participate in a group find....making sure they all know how to use the equipment.....If one person does not have the gear it is simple stay at the hotel or rent........end of story....JMO

Hi Lift!
It's that attitude that gets many people killed. One thing we are doing to try to prevent that attitude is educating kids before they develop reckless ideals regarding safety.
I have been asked to develop a winter safety/survival program for some schools in our area. Our club is helping out with beacons and volunteers so we can teach kids how to be respectful of mother nature. Common sense has to be implemented, as it is obviously not as "common" as we think.
Please rethink the value of your life, and ask yourself, if it's worth it to put your life in the hands of those who aren't capable of saving it.

Do they even carry a shovel and probe? As was mentioned above, mentioing this in front of the wives/girlfriends might be a good idea, 'nag factor' usually always wins out

Your good family buddies must not care for your life and theirs and don't give a chit about their own families. Darn there so expensive so rent the darn things for them as your life is in their hand "MAYBE". I'd find new riding friends if they don't want to beacon up. Beacon, probes and shovels are more inportant that an Avy bag. Hey! you do want to ride in the future Eh!. Good Luck!!!

I rode Chappell with some guys yesturday from Westlock. They said their buddy was hit by a slide on Saturday in Allen that carried him 100 feet or more, but was not deep. He had an avy backpack but was unable to use it because it hit him from behind and he had no chance. He was apparently lucky and only got banged up, as he rode Sunday, but until they develop an auto deploy air back, don't count on it.
