I guided 16 peeps out into the back-country on Saturday and I only knew one of the group. As the responsible guide, I checked to see who was or wasn't wearing a beacon. Guess what, all had beacons on and all had told me they also had just installed new batteries for the first ride of the season.

This is how we doo it in the mountains....no one rides in my group without a beacon!

I have a spare beacon and batteries in my truck just in case.

Friggin' flatlanders, that don't know the ins and outs of avalanche safety scares the hell out of me......

i trust my group with my life at anytime they are family... maybe i will buy a second one and give it too some one too put in there back packs so if something does happen at least some one else has one...

You trust your friends. Hmmm, I have nothing to say about that other than, everyone here that commented I would say is a better friend than the ones that you ride with. :nono::nono::nono:

WoW...Can't believe peeps are this stupid...I can handle the excuses and/or arguments about not taking an Avy course if you have lots of back country experience and have good knowledge about how to use your Beacon and probe and shovel for that matter but to not wear one of the most important tools we use is just flat out stupid. These guys are absolutely useless to you if you become buried as they have no means to locate you. If they become buried themselves they are just putting innocent peoples lives in danger who would be spending hrs on the side of a mountian trying to get a read on them with their Beacons which these fools aren't even wearing....I am shocked there are people this stupid and ignorant today still out there sledding. Its guys like this that give the sledding community a bad name.

SL I would suggest an Avy course to them. Seems they are just plain ignorant of the facts. Until then I agree with all previous posts and ride with a different group.

The answer is plain and simple, find new people to ride with if you value your life! And not to be harsh or a dick but screw them, when they get caught and buried it just thins the heard of morons in the world. If some of them are acutally family and still wont listen to you then speak to the spouses and explain it to them and maybe they can beat the sense into the idiots. These are probably the same type of people that will highmark or cut a slope above someone else stuck on the same slope.

I would say this question is not about them, its about you.
What are your standards for riding partners?
What are you willing to risk?
What are you willing to lose?

do us all a favour and tell these guys to stay the hell out of the back country.

hey all my riding partners dont use beacons but have avy back packs... i have a beacon and use it but what good does it doo if no one else have them or uses them... other then the resuce team can find my dead a$$...
I suggest that if you haven't done so already, take an Avalanche Safety Training course WITH THOSE FRIENDS and that will change their minds pretty quickly. I just took a course on the weekend and it really opens ones eyes as to the importance of beacons and everyone using them when together. Like you said, they aren't much help to you if they don't have beacons, and you are buried they can't detect where you are.

if you have a digital beacon already and get a older analog one with just sound i suggest giving your friend the digital so if you get buried then he can find you alot easier then usuing one of those old one where you have to keep dialing it in. puts you in a better position.

Plus you mentioned that one guy carries a beacon in his backpack, that should help for a quick response when the time comes, by the time he stops, removes his gloves, takes his pack off, find the beacon, more than likely turn it on and then go find you, YOURE DEAD!.

Just find new people to ride with, maybe they'll get the hint if you stop riding with them.

what if one of them was a first responder to a person that is not in his group?

be hard to live that down that he let someone die because he didnt have the 200$ peice of equipment every other person on the mountain has. including little kids!

Your friends are ignorent fawking idiots if they will not wear a beacon. More so to the guy that has one and wont wear it. If I were you I would have found a new group long ago. I dont care if you trust them with your life, they obviously dont care about yours. It amazes me how fawking stupid some people really are. Your best bet is to find a new group, unless you can knock some sense into these so called "friends" you ride with now. One day it will bite them in the ass & they will wish they had the proper gear.

^^^^^^^^ thats like Jenna Jameson calling you a slut^^^^^^^^^

Seriously take the training.... it will change your perspective.....

no Beacon no ride is usually the thing I will not go out riding with people if they dont have a beacon and dont know how to use it!!! My life is to important to take dumb risks like that. an avy bag is a good start however it only ensures you that you are sorta safe not the rest of the guys! anyone who gos out sledding in the mountains or even in deep creek beds or gullies should have a beacon and know how to use it!!

you say they are family? Well Christmas is coming...might be a good time to talk to the other family members who care about their safety (mothers / wives) and get everyone to give them the gift of life...if they all do it at the same time and when everyone is together for Christmas dinner the family can talk about the importance of keeping them and the other family members safe it may send a message that gets through...

if not, i'm always scrounging for people to ride with when i finally get time to go...(because there are some I refuse to ride with a second time) nice heated trailer and always fresh batteries in the beacon...
