I'm looking to upgrade my fleet. Thinking maybe an Align Trex 450 with the new FBL 3GX. Or even a 600e. Anyone pilot one yet? The only 3D I have now is the CP pro by blade. I'm tired of crashing that POS. I'm also looking to upgrade my Radio to maybe a Spektrum DX8? Any input would be helpful.

I have had quite a few of the mall specials and am working on getting into the hobby grade choppers. About 6 months ago i bought the spectrum dx8 and the flight simulator. The salesman talked me into getting the simulator and getting good at it before i bought one. I am quite happy i did cause i would have spent thousands in parts so far. By the the time the snow is gone my intention is to buy a blade 550 eventualy working my way towards a nitro chopper. As far as the spectrum 8 i really like it.

So your using the Phoenix flight sim with it? I think that's the only sim that's compatible with the Spektrum? A real good learner is the Blade SR 120. It's bullet proof and responsive as hell. The parts are real cheap. I've had my fare share of nitro head aches. No more nitro for this guy.

I've been flying r/c aircraft since 1974 and racing r/c hydro's since 1977 and you could not give me a spektrum radio. I've seen too many flown by people and even crashed by world class pilots flying trainers as instructors. Futaba Faast 2.4 is the only way to go. Sorry, not into helicopters....just seen alot of problems with spektrum over the years, granted they have improved, but not up to the standard of a Futaba system.

Racing in washington....

I've got a blade 450 with a spectrum dx6i and aluminum carrying case for 500$. Comes with basically a complete spare blade 450 for parts that I crashed. Also tons of new parts.

I've been toying around with them for years. I have a Blade 400 that has been in pieces for a couple years, as I'm not sure what I want to do with it. I did do a bunch of upgrades, and could take them out and put them in a Trex 450 or 500. I think I would prefer it from the squirrelly Blade. That is all I have for full size helis. I run a Dx6i radio. Not sure why you would need an 8 unless you plan on flying scale some day and adding some extra channels for gear or the like.
I also have a bunch of Blade micro helis. I have the CX2, mSR (this is pretty much done now, had many high speed crashes) and I got their new micro Collective Pitch last summer. This is an awesome little heli, I think it's called the mCP. Super nimble and will challenge you on the controls, but it is so light, that as long as you cut the throttle before you crash, there is usually no damage.

I would look at a Trex 450 or 500, I'm torn between the two myself. Get the Phoenix sim, awesome software, and will save you a bunch in parts down the line.

Most hobby shops will tell you NOT to use a Dx6 with a 3d heli. Not to sure why but have been told to stay away from the d6. I want the D8 for all the telemetry options, backlit screen, thumb roll menu, SD slot, and its set up pre-programmed for almost every 3d heli out there. These options don't come in a 6 channel rig unfortunately.

Yes it is the pheonix flight sim it"s pretty awesome when i get bored of crashing the helis then i crash the planes for a while. I know the nitros are a pain but they are just plain cool.

No hi-jack intended but what would you guys recommend for someone looking to try RC choppers out? Flew my buddy's costco special and it was pretty entertaining. Looking for something middle of the road quality and price for the little guy and I to play around with this summer...

"Real" RC choppers have the same controls as a real one....and therefore harder to fly then a fixed wing plane. I've been flying RC planes for 4 or 5 years and I still can't keep a "real" chopper aloft on the simulator for any length of time. I would start with planes before going to rotary wing...unless the goal is the cheapo choppers with the counter rotating blades and built-in gyros....those fly real easy.

I would recommend buying a good simulator and flying everything before buying the real McCoy. Like Dave says, there notlike flying the "mall specials". My first real heli took me many many hours of practice to just hover for more than a minute let alone do a circuit around the field. I had many many hours of fixing too learning how to hover for that single minute without training gear attached to my skids. Remember that repairing, fixing, tweeking and tuning these things is a large part of the hobby as well. For indoors I just bought one of those Blade quadcopters.....fun chasing the cat around with that and it's fricken quick.

Learning how to fly RC heli's has a very big learning curve to it. I started out with a CX2 and then a Blade 400. I crashed that 400 probably 40 times before I could hover it. Oh ya I was an expert heli pilot on the Phoenix simulator but I still crashed the real deal a bunch. Then all of a sudden everything just began to take shape and focus. It wasn't long after I was able to control the thing in a hover that I achieved loops, rolls, and some inverted stuff. I hung out here and learned a ton of heli info: Helifreak.com - Fun, Learning, Friendship and Mutual Respect

The Atom 500 I have for sale was a much easier heli to fly compared to the Blade 400 but when you crash that one it's going cost more in parts to re-build it. The compass helis are all top shelf.

The bigger they are the harder they fall. This will be about the 10th time rebuilding this ship. This is the whole reason I'm looking for another chopper to work on. I've seen the guts of this one way too many times.
