I think you guys need to put your self in the other person's shoes for a few seconds. This woman was just FIRED from the top political office in our province. A very public spectacle followed by literally everyone across the country. She and her family have had their image tarnished by every news reporter in the industry.
Did she earn this negative publicity?...Maybe.
Does she deserve time to heal? Absolutely!

If you were demoted in your job would you need time to adjust? What if your demotion was covered by every media outlet across Canada? Would this cause stress you and your family? And when you are stressed out and need to get away, where do you go? To the basement?...to your cabin at the lake? We all need to go somewhere.....but most of us don't have the whole provincial media following our every move so getting away locally for her is impossible.

Her family owns property in Palm Springs...and she probably needed to get herself and her family out of the spotlight for a while...what is wrong with this? Most of are allowed some sort of temporary leave from our jobs, so what is wrong if she takes some time to protect her family from the media frenzy?

If this was months later like in the fall sitting of the legislature, then I would understand all the bitching and moaning....but this just happened! She (and her family) has gone through a tumultuous ordeal! Again, it does not matter if it was earned or not. Give her a break. She, like any of you, would do whatever is necessary to protect yourself and your young family if this happened to you.

Will this change my vote next time around??.....I don't know....is there anyone better? Not at this moment....I just cannot find my way to trust Danielle Smith and the other party's are some what of a joke...so we'll see...2 years is a long time away.

Even NDP'r Brian Mason has publically said to leave her alone....Although I have never voted for the him, I respect the man for standing up like that...putting his political colors aside and saying to "leave her alone"...."she needs time to heal"......that takes guts to speak up for someone in the opposition.

This witch hunt has to end.

Please, stop bitching just for the sake of wanting to complain....Ask yourself what you would do if it happened to you? Be honest.

She is a politician, she knew full well when she entered politics that every aspect of her life would become public knowledge. She was forced out because she thought she could get away with spending large amounts of tax payer dollars on very questionable travel expenses. Like the $40,000 she repaid after Nelson Mandela's funeral, or taking her daughter's friend along on a government jet. By apologizing and repaying the money she essentially admitted guilt to irresponsibly spending taxpayer dollars.

I'm sure she is more than embarrassed at the whole situation, I would be too, but if she is unwilling/unable to do her job she should resign her seat so a by-election can be held, as the people of Alberta deserve better, MLA's serve the people, not their own interests.

I am not an Alberta voter. I am for transparency and honesty in government. She did a serious wrong and for that she has resigned and taken the heat for her misgivings. Should she resign her seat as well? Probably, but I don't know what she will decide. I am sure she is trying to sort things out and make a decision and we will hear in due time. The media lives off of stories like this and they can't seem to leave a beaten horse alone to heal. Politics is a big piece of the media's bread and butter and that is also another story/agenda that should be investigated.

Cat401 hit the nail on the head IMHO.

I disagree. She's a crook. She screwed over her people, party and the Alberta economy with her and her parties handling of the budget and all the jobs and budget cuts in the health care industry. And then tops it off by trying to get the taxpayers to pay for her trips and for her to take off for weeks.
There are legal crooked ways to do that, like stress leave or a leave of absence. BUT No! She just takes off.
She's a loser. She should be in jail.

Wildrose, and liberal, and ndp aren't any better.... They're all pompous politicians.... So to pick the best of the worst is a tough choice. I think things will move ahead now, with the iron princess out of the way ;)
All I can say is they better pull another Ralphie out of there hat. Stelmach wasn't any better than Redford. How many times does it take to get it right?

I don't think we'll ever find another Ralph, notice how much we miss him now he's gone, yet as good as he was the PC's still forced him out of office. I'm beginning to think the issue is with the whole PC Party, maybe it's time for change...

I disagree, though maybe as a non-Alberta resident I should just stay out of it. Ahhhhhhhhh.....what the heck! :)

As I understand it........She's not on stress leave or another medically accepted absence. She's not on vacation. She's not down there working. She's AWOL! I, as would most people in the private sector, would lose my job for that. What makes her or any other civil servant so special?

Do you know something that we don't. She answers to the "speaker of the house" about her absence...did he give you some info that he is not reporting to the rest of us??

And I'm not sticking up for her.....I would prefer she be at work doing what we taxpayers pay her to do....I just feel that she is entitled to lay low till the smoke clears....can you imagine the ribbing her daughter must be facing at school?
My point is, if this happened to me, I would be doing whatever was possible to keep my family out of the spotlight until this calmed down.

If I was in the same position and my employer allowed me to stay clear of the media attention for a while...I would be doing it....my well being and my family's well being comes 1st.

Nope. Just what I hear on the news. Really none of my business though I guess. It's not BC politics. :dunno:

The problem is her "employer" isn't letting her do anything, she reports to the speaker of the house on the "honour system", if she has an excuse to miss work he will accept it without asking questions.

If we were all allowed to take stress leave, sick days, etc. without proof how many days would we actually spend at work? Particularly when we are getting paid for these days.

The problem is politicians have a sense of entitlement, they believe they can spend taxpayers money as they wish and are accountable to no one, look at the senate scandal as another example, and this has got to stop.

As for her family, what is the difference between this situation and businessmen that defraud their clients of thousands of dollars, think of how their family's are treated, yet no one is concerned with this, yet its a big deal for Redford? She made the bed, now she has to lay in it.
