That has improved at the Hume hotel and all Nelson because the property taxes went sky high due to property values jumping so much. This gave the municipality more money than they knew what to do with so they built fancy low income housing and rented out several motels to house the homeless. There is very little places for tourists and the home owners will be on the streets soon due to high taxes. It makes it an inviting place for more homeless to come to now.I was at Nelson in a 2021 motorcycle trip. We ate out three nights. The food was amazing but stepping over needle junkies in the lobbies and sidewalks out front was horrible. The really old hotel downtown (forgot the name) had 15 panhandler needle junkies sitting, literally 2 feet from the door. Pretty sad.
