actually the bank of canada says the mini recession is over, so they're not changing the canada bank prime rate... Leaving it at .5%.... Just announced yesterday.

Alberta may be experiencing a bit of a recession? Or just bad govt, ignoring the average worker??

if the recession is over they should start lending again.

Current Governments problem???? I would place blame on the middle east oil producers for flooding the market and previous government for not having the foresight to put some funds away for such an event....8

Anyone that is fubared after just a few months of unsettled activity is in over there head IMO .
Just saying??
Maybe back off a bit on the wants?

But the amount of people that need to work 60+ hrs a week to pay for their stuff is astounding, while for some of us life goes on as normal at 32hrs/week.

It's been more than just a few months for some. Rigs have been getting racked as early as a year ago.

Some yes but most it has only been 6 month +\-
If you can't survive a 12 month slow down in the oil patch you over extended yourself. IMO

Nobody that can't afford it. But it's a big difference when you buy a house, vehicles, kids college, investments etc. on a wage of say a driller at 170K+/yr to going to $25/hr pounding nails. I know guys doing this exact thing. Tough to save enough ahead to make it years and still try to have something to retire on.

I actually prefer to be called the materialistic instant gratification generation, because we all have to have things right now, if I want to know something out comes the cell phone and Google knows all, if I want to buy something out comes the credit card and it's paid for, want a new GF well there's an App for that. People think technology and social media media are harmless, I'm very much opposed to that idea, we are at a point in society where we do things on impulse and ask the questions later or not at all, and it's an incredibly hard cycle to break, but at the same time most of us have that logic in the back of our mind, whether we listen or not is the question.

But seriously who would actually finance everything they "own"?

Actually lbz has sold some of his stuff for different reasons, and has gone back to his ticket for work

But having said that, if u have a company for subcontractor and don't work for a year, u still have to pay alot of stuff with nothing coming in

So ya a year with nothing is now coming from company savings and you as an employee paying from ur different job paycheck to keep it alive

Or there will be lots of folded up Ltd companies

i only read the last few posts, but i might have to try to find the time out of my day to see how screwed up our society is today? Whoever blames the elected folks for their problems need to look inward and not outward. my 2 cents for now.

I dont know anyone in this thread personally but based on your reply to LBZ's above post... I see ZERO entitlement there. All he wants is a house, vehicles, kids and the ability to put some money aside. I didn't realize that would put a person in an entitlement stereotype category.

The other dude posting, ABmax24... is either older than most posting(my assumption), doesn't make the hourly rate he says he does, has a wife/gf with a solid job/family with cash or everything he owns is financed contrary to his statement "But seriously who would actually finance everything they "own"?"

None of my business, but as an outsider watching this from a distance... man the inconsistency is runnin wild.

At any rate....

I don't want to harp on anyone, get in to any heated arguments or make any more enemies than I already have, but I'm finding it difficult to have any sympathy for you. Now I'll admit, I do not know you from Adam, and I have literally never taken two steps in your shoes, and the reverse is also true. My issue is, that I've never made $170k/year, and never will. I have however spent over 40k on my very average education, only to be able to top out at 80k-ish in my industry. We will call that "half" of the $170k you mention. With that I still have all the same bills as you. I own a truck, I paid $6750 for, and paid cash. I own two sleds, and a used trailer, and originally paid $8k for them, cash. I have never made a car payment in my life. My rent typically exceeds most people's mortgages at $1750 a month for an average house in suburbia.... all the while I have been listening to many of my old friends (having grown up in Ft. McMurray) whining about how they might have to pay a little extra on their $200k+ / year salaries. I don't begrudge them for making a killing, good on them. I also don't really care if they somehow can't afford to live on that. They're doing it wrong. I hear b!tching and moaning about Alberta separating from Canada because of the new government (both provincial and federal) because it might amount to them having to actually pay their share. Equalization payments? Let's give that some thought for 8 seconds. Half the people in Ft. Mac making those salaries are imports from NFLD and out east in general. McMurray is jokingly referred to as the capital of NFLD. Makes sense, there's no work out east, so people flock to the oil sands. Pretend for a minute that Alberta didn't do the Canadian thing, and help the less fortunate with those equalization payments, what would happen? People out east would have less, no work, and in turn would have to leave in greater numbers to other places... namely Alberta and McMurray. Now the population of McMurray would be 200k and the job you so dearly cling to would have twice the competition to get it. There's a good chance you would not have it. So ya let's cut off those payments, and watch people flock here and take your work away. I'm not worried, I'm way over qualified.

Furthermore.. the people I am referring to are generally trades people. Some are heavy equipment operators... some are welders.... some I know have grade 9 educations, and a GED and a welding ticket that cost them about 1/10th of my ****ty education and they act like they are doctors curing cancer. Sorry to break it to you (and anyone else reading) but the wages some of these people make are utterly ridiculous.

In my life (just turned 44) no government has ever affected my bottom line in any significant way. A few hundred one way or the other, and I've survived (and even prospered) on far FAR less than $170k/year. In fact my wife and I recently sat down and looked at our budget. We came up with a plan, and will save $23k this year. Not a million.... but it's savings... that's actually a surplus. I am not cancelling Shaw or Enmax or giving anything up, I'm just not being an idiot, and I did all the coke I wanted to in college. I look at our situation... we have 2 vehicles, 2 60" tv's, every game console, 2 PC's, about half a dozen various tablets, a gym membership, food, water, clothes... in short, I have MORE than I need and would be willing to give up a little more to help someone with less.

I even have a gift for those that make $170k and are having a rough time of it....... here it is:
worlds-smallest-violin.jpg~c200.jpg

*EDIT* Oh... and PS. I've smoked weed since I was 12.... never used a credit card, or cared if it was legal or not. Again... the government of the day had no impact on what I do (or don't do)

Not sure how it is now but I do know before in Alberta banks would let you finance yourself 110%, meaning if you were working full time you still couldn't make your payment. Sad thing is I actually had a couple guys working for me that were in this situation. 08-09 were big eye openers. The reason you see used junk listed with high $ is because people owe so much for them. Very few people actually owns their goods but just make payments on them. Heck in the other thread there was someone talking about financing a cell phone...... That my friends is a problem and if people can't recognize it they are the ones that will pay the price. Low interest rates and easy financing will catch up with the folks living off credit cards and pay day loans. It's sad to say but I see so many trying to keep up with the Jones but ego and lack of fiscal responsibility is up to the individual not the government.
