This is from the criminal code of Canada, or at least that is what the website says:
41. (1) Every one who is in peaceable possession of a dwelling-house or real property, and every one lawfully assisting him or acting under his authority, is justified in using force to prevent any person from trespassing on the dwelling-house or real property, or to remove a trespasser therefrom, if he uses no more force than is necessary.
Assault by trespasser
(2) A trespasser who resists an attempt by a person who is in peaceable possession of a dwelling-house or real property, or a person lawfully assisting him or acting under his authority to prevent his entry or to remove him, shall be deemed to commit an assault without justification or provocation.

Sorry if that is adding fuel to the fire.

I do have a real question though. People talk about using game cameras for this purpose but I don't know anything about them. What is the useful range of one to be able to see something like a licence plate? Is there like a flash, or a red light on the thing that would allow the thief to find it and walk away with it and all my stuff?

Trust me, no one would be stopping me from getting my point across to a POS trying to scoop my property or trying to enter my home ;)

Well that went off topic fast...

I don't own any guns nor do I plan to, and that's just personal choice. If I did have guns, thanks jebus I'm a girl because if I did shoot a guy all I'd have to say is I didn't want to give him the opportunity to over power me cause I'm a girl and I'm little, lol.

Back on topic...

I would be curious to know more about the game cameras too as they seem to be a cheap alternative to a professional system and I wonder if they'd be just as effective. Does anyone have anymore insight on this?

Game cameras are generally self contained (no DVR) so they have limited storage capacity for video if they are video capable and if seen, bad guys can steal your photos. Picture quality on some is quite good but chances of a clear face shot are much lower with stills vs video. (minds out of the gutter pervs)

So who uses game camera's and which is the best value for dollar?

As a hunter, I have used as many as four different types over the past number of years, and you get what you pay for. I am currently using one that is great, but freezes up below -15, the Bushnell No-Glow digital trail cam. I use mine on 3MP and can see individual hairs at 50 feet. The only one better, IMHO, is the Reconyx Hyperfire No-Glow IR HC600 (it will go to -30, and is the one used by researchers on the highway overpasses in Banff). Just put in the max SD card and desposable or re-chargable lithium (not alkiline) batteries and you are good to go.

If you are using at around 0 degrees or above, many or all of the units will work, but it they are not the no-glows, animals and humans can see the infrared (IR) flash when it goes off at night, if they can see it - straight on or in their perrifferal vision.

Another tip, elevate the trail cam and use a security box and cable. I have lost a camera by not securing it when in use without a "bear box"/security box, but not again. People, and animals, do not look up when they are in a "new" area, as after three years of use at a remote fishing camp, there is not one picture, out of thousands, of people looking at the elevated camera box (12-14 feet).

Hey rowdy if you're looking for a cheap method to capture the creeps try this:
-$100 buck hi def 12 mega pixel web cam for pc or laptop
-$100 1 TB external USB hard drive
-$30 security software from www.wolfcoders.com/products.php

I run this setup and so far I've captured the azzhat who doesn't clean his dogs crap from my front yard, also the kid who keeps running his hands down the side of my dirty dodge truck, and the kids who keep snapping off the branches on my Brandon cedar trees out front!!!
It's super easy to setup.
Use a laptop with external USB hard drive plugged into it, then setup the software and let the camera start capturing! Let me know if you need a hand to help!!!!

Game cameras work pretty good but hard to get a clear shot of a face with them, buddy suspected his neighbor of stealing from him out on his acerage, put his game cam up and caught the bastard, went to the cops and of course they wouldn't do anything as it was too far from a Tims, so he went to the guys house with multiple photos of him coming over the fence from his property, walking through the yard and into the house via the sliding door and exiting with his property and walking back toward his place. Easily recognized him from the coat he was wearing in the pics but hard to make out a face. Lets just say buddy gave most everything back (whatever he hadn't sold on kijiji yet) and got a nasty beating as well, probably won't steal from his neighbor anymore either

that sounds like it could work. The $hitty part is I am not a techy person whatsoever, lol. So a lot of what you said I have no idea. I think some game cameras would work better than that Samsung one I saw as that will only work to 0.

That is a good idea, but wouldn't that need to be inside? My garage is detached and in the back of my house.
