you first. you really think you wouldn't get in any kind of trouble for shooting a firearm at another human because it only had rocksalt in it?

If they are on your property no. Rock salt is only effective up to about 10 yards. It's more about the mental thought of "oh ch!t they have a shotgun." Not many people in this world have balls to continue trying to steal after you hear a shot gun boom behind you.

What's the thief gonna do? Go to the cops and say he was stealing and they fired off a blank?

how does he know what was in the shotgun? he will tell cops you shot at him, you really think he would say he was trying to steal your stuff? "I was looking for my dog, and this crazy guy comes out with a shotgun and shot at me...."

like I said, you first. let us know how it works out for you.

Try axis cameras you can get an 8 camera software package for free, you use your computer as the Network video Recorder. Get a poe switch and plug in your cameras using regular cat 5 cable and away you go. Avigilon Cameras are very good too but you have to buy the licenses. I believe the software is called AXIS Companion. I will try and look up some prices for you for comparisons. Analog cameras are ancient history and their quality of recording is horrible. Something to think about. As for signage, as it is your property you have the right to look at your stuff. Signage is just letting them know what to look for. Businesses have to post as it is a public domain.

Like I said effective range is only about 10-12 feet. Unless he comes within that range he has no proof you ever shot.

He would have very little legal recourse. If he was looking for his dog knock on your door before going in your back yard.

So a better idea is spending thousands on a security system, having the thieves put on $5 ski masks and walking away with your chit?

My first suggestion would be 3 1/2 buck shot but most people want to take a less lethal approach.

Private property = put as many cameras up you want without signs. Cops use trail cams in their investigations and don't ask permission.

it has nothing to do with legal recourse, it's about the cops coming in, taking your guns, and possibly pressing charges against you for pointing a firearm or careless use. no more guns, no more hunting, and possibly a criminal record. like i said, you do what you want, no way am I going to point a firearm and discharge it toward a bad guy unless my life is threatened, ain't worth the trouble.

Are you an "organization"
Good call. I called the City of Calgary and there is no municipal bylaw covering this so I contacted the police non-emergency line and the woman read this for me.

Government of Canada Website states from the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada
"Most privacy laws require the organization conducting video surveillance to post a clear and understandable notice about the use of cameras on its premiss to individuals whose images might be captured by them before these individuals enter the premiss."

I also left a message for FOIP to call me back.

Which I think is BS. Why should we have to warn someone they are being videoed if they step on our property.

They can not press charges if he was on your private property. Only way they were able to charge bashaw farmer is because he chased then and they were no longer on his property.

You can't legally use a weapon on anyone unless your life is in danger, and that has to be proven... being on your property or not.

That applies to the United States also.

Just because TV shows different, does not mean it's true mister..

There is no law that says that.

We had a problem at the shop people cutting our wire link fence and taking what they want even had night security I guess the guard was tired and sleep at night mount a wildlife camera got them cutting our fence again what I understand the city police know who they are now if they catch them it would be a miracle then actually charge them

Only problem with cameras is that no matter how good the resolution, they are all pretty easily defeated by bad guys wearing a hoodie.
