here is a little video of our new beacon checkers at our trailheads.

obviously I need to shoot a better video, but this will give you the jist.

the delay you see from red to green is simply the beacon turning from receive to transmit. its very quick as you approach the booth.

Just another tool for the tool box to remind us to play safe !

Looks good, but what if a guy doesn't have a beacon? Can he still go or what happens?

we have no power to make that decision for, no do we want anyone to make it for you, people need to start making and being responsibile for their own decisions again, like it used to be before North Amercia got affraid and sue happy..........(that is strictly my own opinion)

But we do as much as possible to educate and inform the public regarding avalanche safety.................

I aways check my group with my own beacon before we leave, but this is a great thing as well. Just another tool in the bag. Thanks

Well, I sincerely hope that the next thing you purchase is a beacon before you head to the mountains. This is a piece of avalanche safety equipment that is non-negotiable.

I just can't believe now in 2010 we are still having sledders heading to the mountains without the proper gear or training. I will, however, wherever I can try to promote the importance of avalanche awareness. Sledders need to start being proactive and realize by not taking the proper training, they are not only putting their own lives at risk, but the lives of others as well.

This attitude also puts our whole sport at risk. :nono:

OK, we have a beacon, and this new system shows you and your buddies that it is operational and sending. But, has people taken avalanche training on how to properly work one. That is very important as well. The AST1 is very valuable to have and worth way more than the 2 days it takes to get. So you loose a day of riding in the mountains but what that gives you is a lot of knowledge. I thought I kind of knew how to operate my beacon before the course but realized I didn't know much. When you are involved in a real life or death situation the AST1 or further courses are priceless. It would be a little embarassing at the toll booth when you go by and dont even get a light anyway.

I think it is a great idea. Last year when all in a rush getting everything ready in the morning I put my beacon on BUT forgot to turn it on. Have also been with friends same situation get to the cabin and realize they forgot to put it on. Back to the trailer you go. And for the record I rode the whole day no beacon didn't realize till I was undressing in the trailer. Not good

Lookin out for people Great job Varda!!!
As for the guy that doesn't have one, Quit being selfish, be in your buddies shoes that has to drive home and tell your wife or family you died because you were to cheap to get one. Or you have to live with going home to tell his wife, kids and family that you didn't have one so could't saved his life..
Its not only your life.....
Rent one , buy one , put it on our Xmas list. Have one!!!!

Thats awesome. How close do you have to be to trigger a green light? I send my son to get our passes while I unload, so for the past couple of years I hav'nt actually stopped at the booth.

Maybe his riding partners should give him the option go back and buy or rent one,or stay home. IMO

i won't ride with anyone that doesn't have one,and i tell them that as soon as we start talking about going to the mtns.

:

Snoqueen i already have a beacon, all i was asking is "what if a guy doesn't have one?what will happen"....because i'm sure some ppl do head up without.. i wish there is a way that they made it mandatory to have one...

His friends are putting their lives into his hands going out there. There is a chance, although slim, that he'll be the only one able to find the others. All the others could be buried or injured. Now he can't do anything because he doesn't have the proper equipment.

this is not an AST1 checker its a beacon checker. lets not get into that debate please

this is another tool in the tool box like mentioned!

even if your beacon is turned on it is still an peice of electronics and may not be functioning properly.
