I'm snooping around Kijiji, looking for a bomb around truck, when I come across this one. I talked to the guy a couple times on the phone, and was there in front of him for almost 20 minutes, before I finally got it out of him that the truck was an insurance write-off. He was doing his best to hide it, but he's such a retarded fawking tool, he couldn't keep his bullsh!t stories straight. Carfax is a great tool when dealing with crooked morons like this.

It was in a front end wreck....bumper, fenders, hood, grille, etc. It has a rebuilt status, which in its own, isn't a big deal if it was fixed properly. I just think that's something that should be disclosed right out of the gate, instead of trying to hide it.

Once a vehicle is a write off the serial number is entered at registries. Only certified repair places and certified inspection facilities can inspect and submit paper work on write offs. We used to do it at the dealership when I worked there. It was a lot of paper work. In the end we quit doing them because of all the paper work. Also people would bring in home repaired crap and want it passed.

I bought a write off when I was 20... years ago. I knew it going in, it was a 94 Chev Z71 ext cab 4x4. Drove it for 120,000 kms and I never had a problem with it. It was fixed properly and probably one of the best trucks I have owned. When I sold it I advertised it as a write off. Took for ever for someone to come and look at it. The first guy to look at it gave me what I asked for it.

Some write offs are pieces of crap.... some are just fine. Depends on the collision damage to begin with. People run for the hills when they hear "Write Off".... but there are some nice deals out there.... if you know what to look for.

If your Douchebag dude dissclosed it rite away he may appear honest... not a Douchebag :)

I do believe by law, he has to disclose it is a written-off vehicle..... They get serial # changes when recertified(which like everyone says, is a pain in the azz) and registries will show that when registering a vehicle. We also used to work with a body shop to recertify vehicles years ago, but it has become too much to accomplish anymore.....

You have to remember the difference between a wrote off truck and a non write off can be as little as couple hundred bucks. It also depends who insurance is paying it your fault your insurance probably wrote off because they are covering the other parties vehicle also, so to keep costs down your vehicle their fault most times will get fixed so your insurance doesn't have to pay you out they pass the bill on the other parties insurance and the bodyshop will make sure the price is right under the write off limit to benifit also.

Also depends on the vehicle which would be worse 07 ford worth 15K wrote off with a rebuild value of 15K and rebuilt? or a 07 chev worth 20k NOT wrote off with 19K worth of rebuilt damage?

If the vehicle is a write off it will be on the registration papers as so. At least thats how it is in B.C. Not sure about Alberta though so don't quote me on it. I do agree that he should have disclosed that information to you right away. It just shows that you have to be diligent when buying vehicles. Don't forget to do a lien search also.

I think that this sums it up. A write off not only depends on how much damage but how much is the vehicle worth. Case in point..... a 76 chev half ton could be writen off with a $1000.00 hit. A 2009 chev half ton may be written off with a $15,000.00 hit. Good point Murninator. I meant to add this to my reply :d

Ya, a write off can come easy. I bought one from a auction 5 years ago, only damage was door lock, ignition, and taillight and blown motor. Truck was only worth about $10,000 not written off and a new motor is not cheap so easy to see why. The inspection was a joke though, guy didn't take 2 hours and it was done. But I am guessing that's because of the damage as you have to take pictures prior to doing anything. But the inspection wasn't cheap was like $400.

But ya they are a PIA to sell. I traded mine into the dealership, I read the paperwork very carefully it said has the vehicle had more then $2000 damage, which it didn't. I am surprised they never even said anything when they found out it was a rebuilt later! Hah deserved it anyways.

My brother was looking at a truck a while ago and the guy didn't disclose it he drove all the way to calgary to find out, he ran the vin at a registry there because the guy seemed shady. When he phoned the guy he was like "ya so whatever". Before my brother went down he ASKED him on the phoned if it's ever been in a accident. I would of lost it on the guy.

Honestly, if the truck seemed good and was a good deal i'd consider buying it and sueing the a$$ out of the guy who sold it without disclosing it. Unless it's on the bill of sale, you can go back and sue them into the stone age. The rule is always rebuilds are worth 25% less. Some many people ask a fortune for them.

People are stupid though there was a dodge cummins on kijiji a bit ago guy said in the ad it was written off (not inspected) and said you could drive it home! Maybe if you want to get stopped, ticketed, and towed.

Ya you don't need to legally disclose a accident if it's not written off. But body shops poor work makes it easy to tell if a vehicles been in a accident. But I do see your point, few thousand in damage can be the difference between nothing on title compared to rebuilt.

i guess if it had a written off certification ya got something to stand on, still good luck in collecting, the guy may have fled the scene so to speak. not sure if ya can go out of province to collect. or will an," as is" on the bill of sale be enough to screw ya?

Ya you need to find them, but no as-is on the bill of sale is not good enough. That is why I always go to a registry, or see there registration before buying one. There is a reason auctions so clearly state a vehicle is rebuilt, because they know you can go back on them.

Best thing to do is look at the registration,if it says under "status", rebuilt instead of ,"active" is has been deemed a total loss..

Doesnt take much these days to toast a vehicle with the price of parts,,,.
