Sled deck safety

How many times have you been in the staging area and you hear that funny noise? A Brraaaappp, brraaaaapp and a mashing of metal followed by "phuck". In many instances, it is one of our favourite parking lot heroes being an idiot. In this instance, it was very innocent. Just a loud noise and one looks around. Oops, all of a sudden there is an Instagram moment!

The sled that was on the right hand side backed off with no apparent problem nor concern until...........he sees what is happening. No damage to sleds, everything happened in slow motion, and the dude that unloaded just had to change his underwear. How many guys seldom/never check the tie-downs or don't install the deck properly? The owner of the truck (an older guy and not the one who took off the sled) was quite calm and said, "here we go, we'll be all over the internet today!"

Since my name has been brought up a couple times with regards to my Silver Lake Manufactured deck, I figured I'd better put up some pictures. This is a process that needs to be thought out from beginning to end; what do you need to do with the flat deck and how can you make it work? Is this the perfect set-up? I don't know if it will work for you but it is working for me. You have to be able to think down the road and plan. I love my truck/deck. With regards to the secure storage under the decks on top of the box, I don't have any. Do I need it? I haven't had a situation where it has been a problem. Others will flatly disagree and that is fine. They have a right to their opinion as I have a right to mine. The rails (the deck comes with stake pockets) are in two sizes as you can see and serve various functions. For hauling fire wood, I made a removable floor to protect the SuperGlides on the decking. The LineX coating has been a God send as it was a royal pain in the butt polishing the aluminum every spring from all the corrosion from the road salt. I met a guy last summer in Spokane who was from Arizona and had a similar deck. It was still nice and shiny and he was wondering why the coating. SuperGlides on the ramp and covering a lot of the deck (three strips for single and double sled hauling) to prevent slipping is a must. Hooks for SuperClamps, front and rear, in single and double configuration. Lots of tie-down hooks for securing various loads.

I did this when the truck was brand new and sold the box, rear bumper, and tail gate to a body shop in Kalispell, MT on the way to Idaho for installation. I kept the rear camera and back-up sensors and they were mounted in the deck at the time of installation. SLM installed the deck, provided mud flaps, and sent me on my way. I even got lucky coming home as the CBS didn't ask the right question regarding truck modifications and I didn't have to pay any taxes/duty. It was a sweet trip!

great topic. seen a few deck fawk ups over the years.

a friend of mine landed a ZRT 800 on the roof of my other friend's F-250. caved in the roof...right in the parking lot of the Manning community hall after a poker rally.

another friend broke his pull start cord and fell off the deck, broke his wrist when he hit the ground.

and another friend drove a brand new XP off the side of the sled deck, onto the pavement of Alpine's parking lot where he just rented it from.

and yet one more friend landed his XP on my headache rack...no damage to truck but mangled up his sled a bit.

saw the aftermath in Clemina of some poor dude that hit the ramp and it came unhooked from the beavertails, went straight up, and came back on top of his head, scalped him pretty good. there was a lot of blood.

Troy, don’t we know someone who was loading their Yamaha apex on a deck in flip flops and shorts? Didn’t go well as it went over the headache rack, onto the roof and down the hood?

That is a great setup for a guy like me, where it's short trips and truck-deck are only used for that

But in the summer I wanted some box and or take it out and put tail gate back on lol

And now that we been a few times a good distance, sure is nice having the storage under the deck ( being elevated up) when there is more than 2 people also




I just about kept old trusty and took box off and decked it

But newer truck is nicer in alot if ways so I'm glad u went that way

Keep eyes out there guys, I bought my hydro deck for 2 grand, have seen a few since, slick lift us the name brand

That was part of our planning. There are only 2 people ever in the truck. Enough room for our gear behind the back seat and the same thing for Costco runs. Works for us but may not for others.

All said and done, $5000. That was 5 years ago now and his prices have increased substantially from what I hear. Their are guys making them in western Canada now and I have heard their prices are competitive. I would be better prepared the second time around with some of the little things to look out for and make it even better (ie ramp and tool box locks should have covers on them and even then I think they would ice up and freeze, under deck closures so the ramp doesn't get covered in road grime, and a modification to the way the ramp is inserted (I fixed mine for the original)).
