If you YouTube Marlon deck install there is a vid of a guy with a grey truck installing deck with bolt through box approach as his previous deck had been strapped in to tie-down anchors and the resulting sway had damaged his top box tail behind the cab and bent out the tie-down anchors. Normally it might be fine to tie-down right up till you hit those big frost heaves by Quartz doing a buck thirty...

My 2015 F-150 I am not overly happy about the tie down hooks in the box I feel they are very cheap but I’ve been luck. Use ratchet strap in the back an turn buckle in the front. I use the additional cargo securements in the front an cross strap the deck to help with the sway. My 07 Duramax had nice strong welded anchor points I personally don’t like the hex bolted points in the F-150

My dad had our welder build a deck for his 1 ton. It held 2 quads and rested on the box (8'). He doesn't use it anymore, so i'm modifying it for my truck, standard box. Our welder will fab a bracket / stand that will slide into my existing 5th wheel hitch rails, then bolt the deck to that. For 2 trips a year with the quads, I figure it will work well.

I use 4 turn buckles then 2 carriage bolts, the carriage bolts are to make sure that the sled deck does not blow off in the parking lot. Nothing like coming back and no sled deck when you arrive.

Add another one to turnbuckles and bolting it to the bed. SGI insures anythin that is “permenrently attached” to the truck. If it’s bolted down it’s classified as permanent. I would check with your insurer.

I personally run 4 turn buckles and two big bolts in the front on my deck. Just make sure you put larger backers on the bolts so it doesn’t deform the bed.

Bolt through the frame or the box?

As long as its bolted to the box it’s classified as a permanent fixture.

If you can get a longer bolt and make it to the frame I’d opt for that, but not drill through the frame, rather get a backer that would grab the frame and tighten the bolt to grab the frame with the backer.

So bolting to the thin guage metal box is just to appease sasky insurance?

Thats all I use. Its in a half ton so I dont want a bunch of extra weight that bolts and turnbuckles are going to add.

i was wondering the same thing, and depending on how the turnbuckles are turned, may even effect load balance while driving, man those ford engineers have a lot to think about?
