Got a letter from BC Hydro about getting a SMART meter installed on my place in BC. Anyone else have this and what have you done about it? I had one put in at home and it's a pile of crap. First off they should not be allowed to replace your old meter if you don't want one, so that's why I'm posting: to see if anyone from BC has refused the installation of one, what steps you took etc..
I have called BC Hydro about getting info on refusing 5-6 times.. each time I have called, I've been hung up on, or the called was "dropped" while being transfered, so I have yet to have a real conversation with f'n anybody regarding this issue. I just don't have 5-6 hrs to waste each goddamn day trying to get thru to a real human being..what a frickin joke, seems most stuff these days is going that direction..IMO!!

-If you don't know anything about SMART meters, you should look into it..
-The R/F transmissions from these meters are not good for your health..
-The meters are increasing "usage" by 2x-3x.. (I have personally seen a twofold increase at home with the new meter, along with many others..)
-They are used to monitor your usage (as in what type of appliance, what time you used it, how long it was used for etc etc..), this information is monitored by the government, and the info is also sold to groups for "marketing"...what a pile of sh!t! Total invasion of privacy..
-And the biggest reason they're not going to help anyone..The government says it's a great idea..they would love for you "beleive it'll be for the best, and if you beleive it, well, you're on your own..

Something to chew on.

I don't watch BC news, so not to sure how hot of a toic it is right now.
Anywhoo, like I said, if anyone has had any dealing with these things in BC or have any info on what can be done about it, feel free to post about it..

since they put one on my place, my electric bills have been higher. not one month this year did i use less electricity than the same month last year(according to them). not one. every single month was more usage---which seems a little fishy to me!!! you would think that at least a few months there would be less usage than the same month last year!!!!!!

Nothing wrong with smart meters....there should still be an analogue/mechanical meter left behind. They come and take a manual reading once a year and make an adjustment. I have smart meters on the water, power and gas....and the old meters are still there for comparison. If it's a big worry, you can compare them yourself every month.

You can refuse to have it installed but they will remove the one you have and leave you without power.

there was a meeting here at Mara (close to Sicamous).... the danger to our health is high.....it gives off 10 X More RF signal that a cell phone.....and schools are complaining about alot less that is cause health problems.......I have been told that BC hydro will be changing them ASAP, but legal they are not allowed on your yard to change if they are told not to......but we all know they will change it and say opps.....sorry.......SO..... I have built a lock that makes it so they CAN NOT change it! I have got orders all ready just from word of mouth......I might have to start mass producing these locks soon.......if anyone wants one let me know and I will add you to the list......

they are changing all the small town so they can sneek it in and get most of BC changed with stiring up crap......then they will hit the big cities.......protect your meter with a lock.....once you have this piece of crap meter you will be stuck with it! be sure to tell everyone you know about this issue.

my lock is cheap......

It's a free world an you can beleive or say what you like, but these smart meters are NOT ok.
If you think the government sneaking around is the way it should be then, well, help us all..

I am not worried about the r/f as I am exploded to worse things at work all the time, but you should have the option not be exposed. Working in the oil/gas industry, I have resources of many ticketed/20+yr inst/elec folks, none of which can explain why many of us have had our electrical consumption double, sometimes even triple since having these meters swapped. They do not leave your old analog meter in place, you have nothing to reference against, and some like mine have no instantaneous usage reading, so the avg guy is screwed trying to trouble shoot short of getting an electrician out at their cost, who is unable to 'find' anything. I know people who have complained enough, refused paying the outrageous bills and had the power company come and install an analog meter in line, miraculously the usage of 14 days with both meters was less than the previous 10 days prior with just the smart meter, which was working out to about a 150$ mo difference..not a big deal for a compan,y but for a small family with every other bill that keeps going up and income staying the same, it's a big deal, where does it stop..
Along with the R/F issue, I think the issues with the usage/metering I have seen, and with the big brother/tattle tale capability, you are wrong to say they are fine.
Thanks for the response and input Overkill, mine has a wooden box on it but it's a long way away from where i'm at right now to lock it, hope I can get a neighbor to lock it for me..keep us posted on any issues you see or hear of about these meter issues!
Since I'm not a scientist or journalist, here's a guy who explains these things much better. I don't get to worked up on most things in life, but sometimes we are all kept in the dark and left taking it in the azz. We all need to be informed, and all need to have an option/voice to things the government says/does, if not, we're all f'd..

that doesn't seem wierd at all buck......................... its not like all the power tools, lights, and long hours of actually building your house could possibly use more power than your tv and a few lights on each day now that your living in it. its the dang kid not turning off lights behind him. lol gotta teach em young.

cyle may have been right, buckies house wasn't built right and it is using way more electricity as it gets older. the wiring was all wrong and the appliaces were not wired right, cyle should do another inspection and at least recommend a demo crew to fix the problem.

maybe he wired it in a continous loop so it is always consuming power.

no chit, and if you ask my family, i'm kind of a power nazi!!!! always turning off crap we aren't using. i just find it strange that every single month my usage is higher than the same month last year!!!!! and they DO NOT leave an analog meter when they switch it over.

might have to contact him and see if he "knows" someone i can trust to tear it down

kid isn't quite old enough yet, or tall enough, to turn everything on---very soon though the little bugger

Ease up on the paranoia....you've been in BC how long? At MY house, the old meter with the little dials is still there....there's a secondary gizmo that transmits the data as far as the street. The meter reader just has to drive past the house to get the data. I prefer this method to the method where the meter reader has to A: come into my yard (and let out the dogs) or B: come into my house.

Along with the R/F issue, I think the issues with the usage/metering I have seen, and with the big brother/tattle tale capability, you are wrong to say they are fine.
No I am not. In MY case...all three utilities have the original meters left behind. Maybe this is an option you guys could request. As for the RF thing...common, really?

i HAD that style to dave, for about 6 months last year, then got replaced with full on smart meter. they don't have to drive by the house anymore and i no longer have the old analog meter

Smart meters do alot more than just 'track your power'... You just don't hear about it..or should I say, 'they are not telling the whole story'
I'm not paranoid, I'm f'n pissed off we as a society are getting raped and screwed over and nobody cares or does anything about it, the government and big monopolized companies are running unchecked, f'n us all in the azz..
I'm not living in BC, but like I said one of my properties is, and is getting changed over to a smart meter without my voice even being heard, as my fisrst post said, that's bullchit. I had one change from analog to a smart meter at home in AB two years ago, not being told any info other than what the power provider said, and now my bills are 2X higher(consumption that is) nothing has changed. Some days I'll use 18KW, next day 40KW, no change in day/day living or weather changes, and I am a power Nazi as well. I had a power bill for $175 this summer....my bud had a bill for $300 this summer, he was on holiday for 2 weeks... No anwsers from anyone as to why.
Just saying I told you so...

Oh, and I'm all for more accurate meters, but if you're going to be monitored etc, you should have to agree to it. Plus, are we not just taking jobs away from people within the power industry, we should be creating jobs in all sectors of the countries economies.
Ok, I'm ranted out.
