I don't understand employee entitlement. Even if you have worked somewhere for 30 years, why should they owe you so much? IMO if they give you proper notice, you should get nothing. An employee can leave an employer high and dry and the employer doesn't get any compensation.

And you've got it really well. Rental company I use to deal with, fired a bunch of the guys when company bought them out, manager after 25 years showed up to work they took his company truck keys, phone, and called him a cab and said you're done. Didn't take him long to find a new comparable job, and this wasn't that long ago. Not sure what kind of severance he got, but sure it wasn't much. I don't agree with how he got fired, but in a lot of cases you can find a comparable job, so why should they be paying for 18 months vacation? You dahm well know most people would spend a year or more not even looking for a job which is not the purpose of it.

Hey where IS the opposing view? You should be able to find a crack pot from the flat earth society on the web that shares your cynicism. (are you two members) Also I am 59 in August young compare to a fossil and my brother is a Lawyer and one of my best friends was a lawyer. Over the years I have required the services of a lawyer from time to time and have never came across a bad one yet. Not a easy way to make a living. Sure there may be bad ones out there but show me a career that doesn't have a few bad apples. The rank and file lawyers works hard for their pay check. My advise for you two is to start thinking positive, hopefully it will change your karma and you will meet a few people that are honest and hard working.

Your brother and your best friend are lawyers? Not at all biased are you.

You made two excellent points 1) "if they give you proper notice" I think the only disagreement you and a lot of people have is what is proper notice?? 2) "Didn't take him long to find a new comparable job" This is one of the most important consideration in severance package. What if there is no job options??
You could be right that some people might not look for a job right away but, I don't think people who have worked their whole life can stop very easy.

The debt and spending levels of Canada's provincial, territorial and local governments are unsustainable, and will need permanent increases in revenue or spending cuts to stabilize their balance sheets, says the parliamentary budget officer.

In his 2016 fiscal sustainability report, Jean-Denis Frechette says the subnational debt-to-gross domestic product ratio could balloon to 200 per cent over the next 75 years, unless there are significant changes. The longer governments wait to act, the worse the problem will get, the report says.
"Subnational debt is unsustainable," Frechette writes. "The consolidation does not need to be made immediately. However, the longer this adjustment is delayed, the greater the required adjustment. "
The report assesses the fiscal sustainability of the total government sector in Canada — the federal government, subnational governments, the Canada Pension Plan and the Quebec Pension Plan.
The PBO analysis concludes that federal spending, the CPP and QPP are sustainable, despite some pressures caused by new spending and an aging population.
But it warns that provincial, territorial and local governments need a combination of revenue increases or spending cuts totalling $30 billion to keep the debt-to-GDP ratio at a more manageable level.
Frechette says this could be done through raising revenues, transferring more from the federal government, reducing program spending, or some combination of the three.
© CBC Manitoba's deficit for the last fiscal year was $522 million, $4 million higher than budgeted. Net debt jumped by $1.4 billion and now stands at $17.3 billion. Ottawa does have the flexibility to help if the federal government chooses.
The PBO analysis concludes that federal government net debt is on a sustainable path and will be eliminated in 50 years. And because federal net debt-to-GDP is projected to fall over time, Ottawa has the fiscal room to boost spending or transfers, even after a big spending budget that included an enriched child benefit program and the decision to keep Old Age Security eligibility at 65.
It's a similar story for the country's public pension sector.
Frechette says the CPP and QPP will see a drop in cash flow over the long term because of an population aging. But he says the rate of return on the pension fund assets will generate enough income to keep the pensions healthy.
But Frechette cautions this analysis doesn't include the agreement Canada's finance ministers reached in Vancouver to expand and enrich the CPP. He says his office will assess those changes when more details are released.

I just went through the lay off thing with a private Alberta company that went under ccaa protection, sold all its assets and shut it's doors leaving the employees high and dry. No severance to speak of for the guys that stuck it out to the end. 3 weeks is all everyone got. Guy's with 10+ years. They called it a working severance. And apparently it was legal because the company was sold.

Well things are finally getting better out there. Not out of the woods until next Fall, but the end is in sight. Things are going to ramp up in 2017 and there will be a lot of pressure to minimize inflation (price increases, wage improvements, hiring). Every part of the oil and gas sector wants a piece of the growth.

Didn't Finning just announce another 200 lay offs in Red Deer for 2017 .
Like 800 said it will be another year yet . IMO

As of right now in nisku the drilling companies are starting to do more. We are getting busy. Bring back a few guys! Hope it continues and just not a flash in the pan!

Oil royalties lowered to be consistent with BC and Natural Gas. In effect in 2017 but can apply to put into force in Q4 2016. Without the lower royalties, Canada is not competitive with US - money and jobs simply move south.

Bleeding is not over but this thread is two years old now and we have one year to go. Recovery will be slow. There has been a lot of change, but at least most of it is behind us.
