Ok! you people posting around here....... if your employer paid you similar or same to the wage he did 6 to 8 years and gave you the same paid vacation he did 6 to 8 years ago how long would you stick around? I dont care if youre the employer or employee, put yourself in PJ's shoes! I would be willing to bet you wouldnt stick around for long either!

The only kind of employees that a hard azz employer gets are the ones like I mentioned before- the ones that coouldnt pour pizz out of a boot with directions on the bottom because anybody smarter knows where to get the respect they deserve and its not there!

I know there are strong feelings bout these kind of topics from previous threads (joey's threads in particular.) but honestly I think one has to stop and put himself in the persons shoes. Not always is the employee right but in this case I would say he is. After all why would the employer keep him that long if he was no good? only one of two reasons

#1 He doesnt know how good of help he has and treats all his employees like this

#2 He knows nobody else would work for him cause the way he treats his employees

Like I say sometimes we have to stop and think for a minute what could be going on here.

yes the grass is alwys greener but once you get over there usually you realize it is because there is way more fertilizer on that side j/s

or like my grandfather always says, "it is greener on the other side of the fence because you are spending too much time watering it while the ground you stand on, the grass is dead"

Yes the employee needs to earn it first, by working hard, showing up on time, etc. But if they do and get no respect there is nothing wrong with moving on and giving zero notice. I've left one job on the spot, rest i've said i'm here as long as you need, but they treated me right. Three months of hard work is long enough to earn respect. Crap like getting an hours notice for overtime, when they knew dahm well days in advance. Saying it's mandatory to work overtime and weekends and saying "to bad" when you point out it wasn't that when you agreed to the job. Working through a unpaid lunch and refusing to pay for that extra time. Won't put up with that garbage. The biggest thing that pissed me off was the working for free for a half hour.....sad that people don't have the balls to stand up to some employers like that.

hate to say it cyle, but you wouldn't have made it in the '80, early 90's with that attitude. If jobs were tight and the mortgage was due and wifey wants you to pick up a pack of diapers for junior you would be singing a different tune.

If he refuses to give you a raise and more vacation time could it be the employee is not worth a raise and giving a bunch of extra vacation time? We run around 15-20 people and finding good employees is VERY difficult. So when we do find good ones we keep them around.

I know how PJ feels. Been at my place of employment for a fair bit. Been asking for a raise for a VERY long time... nothing. "TIMES ARE TOUGH" he says, but can go out and buy hot rod cars, brand new boats, go for 5 weeks to the dominicain, ect.. Granted, he can do whatever he wants to, but he needs to remember WHO"S busting their butt to make him that money. I've given up my X Mas holidays last year to help him out, given up my summer holidays ( 3 years in a row) to help him out, and I could go on.

Anyways, Congrats PJ on the new job, best of luck on the new journey. :D

WOW...........Mare you have made a lot of sacrifices for your employer with YOUR personnel time..............I do not need to pry but ask yourself when will this end................you did it before why not again and for what? If I was your employer and with the stuff you illustrated this person has I would sell one item and although times are tough would make your life better and meet your demands...........an employee that would do that for me is worth more than a hot rod..........But remember one thing you only have one shot at this life, there is NO second chance...........enjoy life as best as you can............

Good luck PJ and congrats

i couldnt agree more, if u are losing out on personal time.family time... i recommend that u stop know before it gets worse, heres why.... i went through the same thing with my employer for 5 yrs...being outta town and always working...but heres what it cost me a relationship after 8yrs, possibly a second relationship...friends that i lost touch with (from being outta town), "S&M" time, being able to travel to Ontario and c family...i can go on...but heres what i did, i went to the employer and said thats enough ive been outta town all the time while other guys have been in town the whole time, so i told the company either keep me in town, switch me out with the guys that havent been past city limits or im gone....
my schedule is now 10.5 hrs a day 5 days/week
Stop letting them run/lving your life....you will be thankful in the end. that u step up and talk to your employer...if they wont help, then its time to find another gig.........this is just my story, everyone else will be diff.....

It makes it even harder now that my spouse was laid off at the end of October. I am looking, believe me. I work hard and just deserve a bit more on a pay check. I have to take on a second job now cause we cant make it on what I make and my hubby cant find anything.... hope it changes soon. I would hate to have to sell my sleds but will do it if it comes down to survival.

He can do almost anything. Was doing landscaping and lawn care, but the company is seasonal, which they just changed to. They used to do year round work. Has skid steer exp. He worked at a tire shop before that. I told him to get a job on the rigs... ANYTHING right now.. Im getting burnt out doing it all alone.

UPDATE: Left my job this May.. mainly because the Dr told me if I continued to do what I was doing, I would cripple my hands. Secondly was still never got a raise after 4 years of asking. Did 4 jobs and paid for 1.. I had enough.

Good luck with your new job PJ. Do not know much about your circumstance but you need to do what you feel is right.

Interesting variety of attitudes on this thread. Every company has its good side and dark side. As long as the good outweighs the bad, you should stick as no job or employer is perfect. If you feel there is more bad than good and still stay, you are doing yourself AND your employer a disservice as it shows up in the quality of your work.

I have been both an employee and an employer of 25 people in a smaller company with $35,000,000 in sales. Most employees were good most of the time and stayed. I thought of these people as my core and I made sure I looked after them fairly plus a bit more and that varied with the profitability of the company. I overlooked occasional problems with individuals as we are all human and are imperfect. I never demanded or expected respect but I did not tolerate disrespect either to me or between employees.

From time to time a core person would pursue other opportunities and I wished them well. On one occasion I hired one person back but for the most part the change was as good for our company as it was for the person moving on. There were only couple of core people who were exceptional and they now own the company.

I occasionally encountered a few people who really thought they were something and those who didn't quit on their own (usually claiming I and most everyone else didn't know what we were doing and they were much smarter/capable than us) had to be fired because most of the core people found them too difficult to work with.

A job is a relationship like any other. You can't expect more from it than you put into it.
